Amusing Monday: Surf dogs take humor award

Returning from a week of vacation on the Hawaiian island of Maui, I thought it would be fun to feature some amusing clips of people surfing in big waves. I couldn’t find any good ones. Even spectacular wipeouts are not all that amusing.

What I did discover in scanning through many videos is that more than one surfing competition in Southern California has gone to the dogs — literally. As the local CBS network affiliate WPEC put it: “Sit. Stay. Surf.”

More than 50 dogs participated in the Sixth Annual Loews Coronado Bay Resort Surf Dog Competition, a charity event held earlier this month in Imperial Beach, Calif. WPEC’s three-minute video clip (right) lacks only a little Beach Boys music to make it complete.

If you need the sound of surfer music to set the mood, check out a 10-minute video of the same event produced by SoCal Beaches Magazine (below). If you can believe the owners of these dogs, most of these animals enjoy surfing, despite their mixed abilities and varying levels of confidence as they ride the waves.

A better video, but without music, is the 10-minute feature produced by the magazine during last year’s Surf Dog Surf-A-Thon in Del Mar (below). This year’s event, which is a benefit for the Helen Woodward Animal Center, is coming up on Sept. 11.
