Hebard, Beers, Kerns all win at spring divisionals

Eleanor Hebard of Olympic Aquatic Club won two individual titles and placed in two other events at the Pacific Northwest age-group spring swimming divisional meet Saturday at the King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way.

Hebard won the 100-yard freestyle title in the 9-year-old division in 1 minute, 12.84 seconds. She won the 100 individual medley in 1:23.26, and was second in the 50 breaststroke and fourth in the 50 backstroke. Ava Harris of PPST was second in the 10-year-old 50 butterfly while Margaret Hayes of BISC was third. Hayes finished second in the 50 freestyle and third in the 50 backstroke.

Bremerton YMCA Swim Team’s Brendan Kerns won the 9-year-old 50-yard butterfly in 34.41 seconds. He was third in the 50 backstroke, 100 individual medley and 100 freestyle. Bainbridge Island Swim Club’s Sean Markow was second in the 50 breast. In the 10-year-old division, Isaac Beers of Poulsbo Piranhas Swim Team won the 50 butterfly in 32.75, was third in the 50 backstroke and fourth in the 100 IM.

The meet continues Sunday.

Washington Open meet begins Thursday at KCAC

The 38th Washington Open will begin Thursday and run through Sunday at the King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way.

The meet, which is hosted by Valley Aquatics, lists the Poulsbo Piranhas Swim Team, Bremerton YMCA Swim Team, Olympic Aquatic Club and Bainbridge Island Swim Club as participants.

Thursday’s meet begins at 6 p.m. with the finals of the 1,000-yard freestyle. Friday prelims are at 9:30 a.m. with finals at 5:30 p.m., Saturday is at 9 a.m. with finals at 5:30 p.m. Sunday prelims are at 9 a.m. and finals at 4:30 p.m.

Locals compete strongly at Pac Coast All-Star meet

Bainbridge Island Swim Club’s Lia Campbell was the top finisher from the local contingent that was named to the Pacific Northwest All-Star team at the Pacific Coast meet last weekend.

Campbell had three second-place finishes and five other top 10 finishes in the 13-14 year old division at The Evergreen State College pool in Olympia. Campbell was second in the 50-yard freestyle (24.28 seconds), 100 free (51.78) and 200 free (1:55.68). She was seventh in the 200 back and helped the PNW team to fifth-place in the 200 free relay, 400 free relay and 200 medley relay and sixth in the 400 medley relay.

BISC’s Makai Ingalls was fourth in the 50 backstroke, fifth in the 50 butterfly, sixth in the 100 individual medley, seventh in the 100 fly and ninth in the 50 free and 100 back. He also helped the PNW boys 11-12 year old relays place among the top five; second in the 200 free relay, 200 medley relay and fourth in the 400 free relay and 400 medley relay. BISC’s Garrett Waite helped the 13-14 PNW team to a third-place finish in the 200 medley relay (1:41.90), sixth in the 400 free relay and eighth in the 400 medley relay. He was also 15th in the 50 free, ninth in the 100 back and 10th in the 200 back.

Also placing among the top five for the PNW All-Stars in the relay events were Eleanor Beers of the Poulsbo Piranhas Swim Team in the 11-12 year old category (200 free relay, 400 free relay, 200 medley relay, 400 medley relay) and PPST’s Tim Gallagher also in the 11-12 category (200 medley relay, 400 medley relay).

Individually, Beers was ninth in the 100 free, 11th in the 50 free, 12th in the 500 free, 11th in the 50 back and 12th in the 100 fly. Gallagher was 15th in the 200 free, seventh in the 50 back, eighth in the 100 back, and 14th in the 50 breast, 100 breast and 100 IM.

Local swimmers headed to LC meets this week

Swimmers from Olympic Aquatic Club, Bainbridge Island Swim Club and Poulsbo Piranhas Swim Team will compete at two long-course meets this week.

OAC’s Zane Guyt and BISC’s Shea Schardein are swimming in the Western Zone Age Group Championships Wednesday-Saturday in Roseville, Calif. while Tim Gallagher and Eleanor Beers will represent PPST at the North American Challenge Cup, Thursday-Sunday at King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way.

Also, PPST coach Patty Jenkins will coach the 13-14’s Pacific Northwest All Stars in the Challenge Cup.

 

Locals headed to Western Zone Championships

Samantha Lingenbrink of the Bremerton YMCA will swim at the Western Zone Senior Championships in Clovis, Calif. Wednesday-Saturday.

Lingenbrink is seeded into the 200-meter backstroke (52nd).

Leah Avery, who swam at Central Kitsap, is also seeded in the 100 freestyle (117th), as is Lingenbrink (124th). Sarah Avery, who swims for BYST but is listed unattached, is seeded in the 200 freestyle (112th) and 100 breaststroke (54th) while Leah is seeded 56th. Lingrenbrink is seeded 114th in the 200 free and 71st in the 400 individual medley, 104th in the 400 free, 62nd in the 100 backstroke and 131st in the 50 freestyle.

Poulsbo Piranhas’ Serita Solis is seeded in the 50 free (81st) and 100 butterfly (84th) and teammate Katherine Anderson is seeded 125th in the 50 free.

 

Local swimmers among PNS best on final day

Bainbridge Island Swim Club’s Ian Lipton finished second in the 10-under 400-meter freestyle at the Pacific Northwest Swimming Long Course Championships on Sunday. Lipton finished in 5 minutes, 33.44 seconds at the King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way. Lipton also placed third in the 10U 50 backstroke in 38.48 seconds.

Garrett Waite, BISC, placed second in the 11-12 100 butterfly in 1:04.70 and second in the 50 backstroke in 30.73, just off first-place finisher William Zhou of Bellevue in 30.31. Kevin Houseman of Poulsbo Piranhas Swim Team placed third in the 11-12 50 breaststroke in 36.75.

Other top eight finishers include; Lia Campbell of BISC placed fourth in the 13-14 200 freestyle in 2:11.49 and seventh in the 100 fly in 1:08.07; Poulsbo Piranhas’ Brianna Hoffman finished fifth in the 10U 400 free in 5:48.65 and eighth in 200 free in 2:46.55, BISC’s Ian Lipton placed fifth in the 10U 100 butterfly in 1:25.41; Nathaniel Lapin of BISC finished sixth in the 10U 50 breaststroke in 44.94; Hannah Tonsmann finished sixth in the 11-12 200 free in 2:24.00 and seventh in the 11-over 800 free in 10:24.63; Makai Ingalls of BISC finished sixth in the 11-12 100 fly in 1:10.05 and fourth in the 50 back in 32.85 while Poulsbo’s Tim Gallagher finished eighth in the 100 fly in 1:12.75. In the relays, BISC’s boys 11-12 400 free relay finished third in 4:30.82 while the 11-12 girls 400 free relay finished eighth in 4:35.69. BISC’s 13-14 400 free relay placed fourth in 4:16.49.

Day 3 PNS Champs: Waite second in 200 backstroke

Bainbridge Island Swim Club’s Garrett Waite won his second individual event at the Pacific Northwest Long Course Championships Saturday at the King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way.

Waite won the 11-12 year old 200-meter backstroke in 2 minutes, 22.11 seconds.

Kevin Houseman of Puget Sound Swim Club finished second in the 11-12 100 breaststroke in 1:19.07.

Dylan Macabitas of Puget Sound Swim Club placed third in the 13-14 200 backstroke in 2:22.59, while Makai Ingalls of BISC was third in the 11-12 50 butterfly in 29.99 seconds. Timothy Gallagher placed fifth in the same event in 31.26.

Other top eight finishers include Nathaniel Lapin of BISC, who was sixth in the 10U 100 breaststroke in 1:38.90 and Ian Lipton who was fifth in the 10U 200 individual medley in 3:00.79.

In the relays, BISC’s 11-12 boys 200 meter free relay placed third in 2:00.24. Poulsbo Piranhas finished fourth in the same event in 2:00.93. BISC’s boys 10U 200 free relay, which finished eighth in 2:29.21. The girls 13-14 200 free relay finished sixth in 2:00.12 and the 15-over 200 free relay placed seventh in 1:53.75.

The continues Sunday at 8:30 a.m. (prelims) and 5 p.m. (finals).

Day 2 of PNS Champs: Waite, Campbell win titles

Bainbridge Island Swim Club’s Garrett Waite claimed his first title at the Pacific Northwest Swimming Long Course swimming championships Friday.

Waite won the 11-12 year old 200-meter butterfly in 2 minutes, 25.11 seconds, beating out Bellevue Club Swim Team’s Vlad Elizarov in 2:29.31.

Not to be undone, Waite’s teammate, Lia Campbell, won the 13-14 100 freestyle in 59.63 seconds, holding off Christina Domanowski of Bellevue in 59.77. Campbell finished third in the 400 freestyle in 4:35.96 and seventh in the 200 fly in 2:32.49.

Waite was also second in the 100 backstroke behind William Zhou of Bellevue. Zhou finished in 1:05.79 to Waite’s 1:06.57. Teammate Makai Ingalls was fifth in the same event in a time of 1:11.65.

BISC’s Ian Lipton was third in the 10U 100 backstroke in 1:20.32, fifth in the 100 free (1:14.18), and sixth in the 50 free in 33.08.

Other top eight finishers include; BISC’s Hannah Tonsmann, who was sixth in the 11-12 400 freestyle in 4:58.59 and Shea Schardein, sixth in the girls 200 butterfly in 2:48.12.

Puget Sound Swim Club’s Dylan Macabitas finished sixth in the 13-14 100 backstroke in 1:05.85.

Poulsbo Piranhas Swim Team’s boys 11-12 200 medley relay finished seventh in 2:22.07.

Also, King Aquatic Club’s girls 200 medley relay broke the national age group record in the 17-18 category. King’s Hannah Weiss, Carolyn McCann, Heidi VanderWel and Morgan Ginnis finished in a time of 1:56.39, bettering the mark of 1:57.57 by the Aquajets of Minneapolis in 2011.

The meet continues Saturday with prelims at 8:30 a.m. and finals at 5 p.m.

UPDATE: King’s 15-16 boys 200 medley relay set the NAG record Friday. Thomas Anderson, Josh Maclurg, Mathias Oh and Tommy Thach finished in 1:44.60 to obliterate the old record of 1:46.76 by Irvine NovaAquatics that included Aaron Peirsol and Mike Cavic.

Day 1 of PNS Champs: Still Waite-ing for title

Bainbridge Island Swim Club’s Garrett Waite looked like the swimmer to beat in the 200-meter individual medley, but Bellevue’s William Zhou had other ideas.

Zhou beat Waite, the top seed in the 11-12 year old category, at the Pacific Northwest Swimming Long Course Championships at the King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way Thursday.

Zhou won the event in 2 minutes, 21.54 seconds, running away with the title. Waite, who was nearly three seconds ahead of Zhou after the prelims, finished in 2:28.46.

BISC’s Lia Campbell was a close second in the 13-14 50 freestyle in 27.58 to winner Elisa Fang of Bellevue in 27.28. Campbell finished fifth in the 13-over race in 2:30.32.

Other top 8 finishers were: Poulsbo Piranhas Swim Team’s Isabel Hendryx, 11-12, 50  free, eighth, 30.63; BISC’s Makai Ingalls, 11-12, 50 free, fifth, 28.78; Puget Sound Swim Club’s Kevin Houseman, 11-12, 200 breaststroke, fourth, 2:56.74, Olympic Aquatic Club’s Zane Guyt, 200 breast, seventh, 3:03.78.

BISC’s 11-12 boys 400 medley relay finished third in 5:00.46 while the girls 13-14 400 medley relay was eighth in 4:57.15.

Friday’s prelims are at 8:30 a.m.
