Bainbridge Dive Club sending divers to Zone E Nationals

Four members of the Bainbridge Island Dive Club will head to the Zone E National Preliminary Championships, in July in Utah after qualifying for the meet last weekend.

Henry Sauermann and Bryan Taylor both qualified for the 12-13 year old 1-meter and 3-meter events, Bryn Tiernan qualified for the 12-13 year old 1 and 3-meter events and Zora Opalka qualified for the 16-18 year old 3-meter.

The four qualified at the USA Diving Region 10 Championships, held last weekend in Provo, Utah. BIDC sent seven divers to the event that included 208 divers from Washington, Oregon, California, Alaska, Hawaii, Nevada, Idaho, Arizona, and Utah.

At the Region 10 championships, Mia Alpaugh placed 30th in the 12-13 year old 1-meter event with a score of 109.2 for seven dives and 29th (124.1) on the 3-meter.

Also in the 12-13 year old 1-meter competition, Tiernan placed 25th on the 1-meter with a score of 179.7 for seven dives, and in the 3-meter event, earned a qualifying score  of 179.7, to finish 17th.

Sauermann placed ninth on the 1-meter board in the age 12-13 year old division, scoring 119.2, and seventh place in the 3-meter event with a qualifying score of 189.

Brian Taylor placed 8th in the age 12-13 year old division 1-meter event with a score of 178 for eight dives, and ninth in the 3-meter event with a score of 171.45.

In the 16-18 year old girls one-meter event, Jackie Hellmers was 53rd with a score of 82.8 for five dives, and placed 44th in her 3-meter event with a score of 119.85.

Cameron Rouser dove in the 16-18 year old girls 1-meter event, earning a score of 139 for five dives to finish 41st. She was 40th in the 3-meter event, scoring 132.25.

Also in the 16-18 year old girls events, Opalka scored 144.95 on the 1-meter board for 40th place, and in the 3-meter event with a score of 378.4 for 10 dives, placing 16th.

The 2016 Zone E National Preliminary meet will take place July 4-10 at University of Utah’s HPER Natatorium in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Bainbridge Island Dive Club will compete in the 2016 BC Summer Provincial Diving Championships at the Grandview Aquatic Centre in Surrey, B.C., May 27-29.

NCAA approves sprint medley, synchronized diving

On Thursday, the NCAA announced five new rule changes for the 2015-16 men’s and women’s collegiate swimming and diving seasons.

  • Synchronized diving approved for dual and invitational meets to replace any springboard or platform event.
  • Backstroke starting wedges approved
  • 100 IM approved for inclusion at conference championship meets
  • Removing requirement to separate hands before taking dolphin kick on breaststroke pullout
  • Requirement for allowing strobe lights for deaf or hearing-impaired swimmers.

 

BI divers wrap up competitive season

The Bainbridge Island Dive Club finished the 2015 competitive club season at the USA Diving National Preliminary Zone E Championships June 10-12. The zone meet drew in divers from Washington, Oregon, Idaho, California, Alaska, Hawaii, Colorado, Utah and Nebraska.

Bainbridge’s Bryn Tiernan finished 18th in the 1-meter and 3-meter events with scores of 113.80 and 113.50, respectively. Tiernan competed in the 11 to 12-year-old division.

In the boys 12-13 division, Henry Sauermann, also of Bainbridge, placed 15th in the 1M and 3M with scores of 151.90 and 163.45.

Opalka, Sauermann earn gold at Provincial diving meet

Two members of the Bainbridge Island Dive Club, Zora Opalka and Henry Sauermann, won events at the BC Summer Provincials Dive Meet last weekend in Victoria, B.C., Canada.

Opalka, of Bainbridge, had a score of 391.65 on the 3-meter springboard in the 16-18 year-old division. She also placed seventh on the 1-meter (322.15).

Sauermann, of Bainbridge, won the 3-meter with a score of 203.55 and also earned a silver medal on the 1-meter with a score of 176.20.

BIDC teammate Cammie Rouser, of Kingston, earned silver in the 3-meter (331.15) and ninth on the 1-meter (278.40).

Poulsbo’s Jackie Hellmers, competing in the 14-15 year-old division, finished second on the 3-meter with a score of 240.95 and fourth on the 1-meter (235.20). In the 11-12 division, Bryn Tiernan of Bainbridge earned a bronze on both the 1-meter (162.30) and 3-meter (140.25).

Both Sauermann and Tiernan qualified for the USA Diving National Preliminary Zone E Championships in Beaverton, Oregon, June 9-12.

Local divers compete in junior championships

Three members of the Bainbridge Island Dive Club traveled to the 2014 USA Diving Summer Junior Region 10 Championships earlier this month in Santa Clara, California.

The meet is the first step towards qualifying for the national championships. The top 12 finishers qualify for zone championships, and the top finishers from zones qualify for nationals. Henry Sauermann of Bainbridge qualified for zones on both the 1-meter and 3-meter springboards. Sauermann finished eighth in the 3M, under 11 category with a six-dive total of 114.75 points. He finished ninth in the 1M with a score of 113.65.

Former zones and national qualifier, Cammy Rouser of Kingston and Jackie Hellmers of Poulsbo also scored personal best reverse dives. Rouser, competing in the 14-15 year-old category finished 31st with 188.45 points in the 3M and 29th in the 1M with 213.10 points. Hellmers was 44th in the 1M with a score of 145.85.

The zone championships will be July 10-13 in Tucson, Arizona.

Area divers place at international meet

Bainbridge Island Dive Club’s Cammy Rouser won two events at the iDive Invitational in Vancouver, British Columbia, during Memorial Day weekend.

Rouser won the 14-15 year-old title for the 3-meter springboard with six dives totaling a score of 197.7 points. She also won the 1M springboard with seven dives and a score of 253.6 points. BIDC’s Jackie Hellmers was second in the 3M with 187.25 points and third in the 10 with 153.35 points.

On the boys side, BIDC’s Carter Wolff placed second in the 12-13 year old 3M springboard (five dives) with a score of 160.75. Wolff was also fifth in the 1M event, scoring 133.8 points. Also in the 3M Duncan Platz  scored 158.75 points — good enough for third place. Platz also placed third in the 1M with a score of 148.6. Henry Sauermann placed fourth in the boys 3M 10-11 year-old division with a score of 118.75 points. He was also fifth in the 1M springboard with 108.8 points.

“We have a young, hard-working team that supports each other very well. I expect you’ll hear a lot more from these kids,” said BIDC coach Chris Miller. The club team is comprised of divers from Bainbridge Island, Bremerton, Poulsbo and Kingston.

The club will be participating in diving meets through July. Next up is the Summer Junior Region 10 Championships in Santa Clara, California on June 13. That meet is part of the qualifying system for the national championships.

Local divers place at NW Holiday meet

Bainbridge Island Dive Club’s Duncan Platz of Kingston won the Future Champions 1-meter diving event at the AAU Northwest Holiday Classic dive meet Dec. 7-8 in Beaverton, Ore. The meet included 64 divers from Washington, Oregon, and Idaho.

Platz finished with a score of 147 in the 12-13 age division. He was also second in the 3-meter event with a score of 120.

BIDC’s Jackie Hellmers, of Poulsbo, finished third in the 12-13 Junior Olympic (156) and Future Champions (146) 3-meter events. Bainbridge’s Zora Opalka, and Cammy Rouser, of Kingston, finished sixth and seventh in the 14-15 Junior Olympic 3-meter competition with scores of 250 and 221, respectively. Opalka was also sixth in the Junior Olympic 1-meter (224) and Rouser was ninth (205).

BIDC, which is coached by Chris Miller, also met two-time Olympian Kelly McCormick, who won silver in the 1984 Games and bronze in 1998. She also won nine national springboard titles and two Pan Am golds.
