Nathan Adrian won the 100-meter freestyle in the first race of the three-city tour of the Mare Nostrum Series on Saturday in Monte Carlo, Monaco.
Adrian, a multiple Olympic gold medalist from Bremerton, touched the wall in 48.67 seconds. Russia’s Andrey Grechin was second in 49.24 and Belgium’s Pieter Timmers was third in 49.38. Adrian earned $449 with the win.
Adrian swam a total of 350 meters of racing after completing the prelims and finals of the 100, he swam in the prelims (22.49), and a secondary heat (22.51) before finishing the quarterfinals of the 50 freestyle in 22.09.
The 50 free semifinals and finals are Sunday. Adrian’s Cal Aquatics teammate Anthony Ervin is seeded second in 22.27.
The series will next move to Canet, France, June 11-12, and Barcelona, Spain, June 14-15.
