Dick Hannula Classic Friday-Saturday at SK pool

The Dick Hannula Classic meet will be Friday and Saturday at the South Kitsap HS pool.

If you’re unfamiliar with Hannula, here’s a quick synopsis that might explain how great of a coach he was:

Hannula coached 32 years at Wilson High in Tacoma. During that time he won 323 meets without a loss, from 1959-1983. That include 24 straight WIAA boys high school meets; founded Tacoma Swim Club in 1955 and coached for 42 years; coached  four Team USA Olympic members; a member of the American Swim Coaches Association Hall of Fame, International Swimming Hall of Fame, Washington State Sports Hall of Fame and the Pacific Northwest Hall of Fame — just to name a few.

The meet begins at 9 a.m. Saturday for Session 1. Session 2 is at 1:15 p.m. Session 3 is Sunday at 9 a.m., Session 4 is at 1:40 p.m. and Session 5 is at 5:45 p.m.

Among the local swimmers who are listed on the psych sheet as the No. 1 qualifier in their age group are; Isaac Beers, Poulsbo Piranhas ST, 10-Under 50- and 100-meter butterfly; Adrian King, PPST, 10U 50 free, 50 and 100 breaststroke; Ethan Fox, 11-12 50 free; Kevin Houseman, Puget Sound SC, 11-12 200 breast.

I will note that Poulsbo Piranhas’ Eleanor Beers is ranked No. 1 in three events, but the 11-year-old won’t be swimming due to a broken left arm.
