If you’re by a television this afternoon, you might want to tune
in to ESPN’s Jim Rome Is Burning. Bremerton’s Marvin Williams, the
third-year forward with the Atlanta Hawks, is scheduled to be
interviewed by the smack-talking host.
The 30-minute program airs at 1:30 p.m.
I think you can also hear the interview live if you go to
http://www.jimrome.com/home.html.
Marvin’s had a huge game against the Sonics at KeyArena on Jan. 26,
pouring in a career-high 33 points that night while looking like
the dominating player many of us thought he could be.
It had to have been a satisfying and fun night for the Bremerton
High grad. He came up with 50 tickets for his family and friends
and there were at least that many or more who had tickets of their
own.
I think you can expect more nights like that one from Williams,
who’s just coming into his own. It was the kind of night that
explained why Atlanta picked the versatile 6-foot-9 forward with
the No. 2 pick inthe 2005 draft.
It’ll be interesting to see if Marvin continues to flash the kind
of take-charge mentality he showed that night. In the few times
I’ve watched him on television in the past, he always seemed to
take a back seat to teammates Joe Johnson and Josh Smith. Against
the Sonics, he looked like one of the best players in the NBA.
Coach Mike Woodson told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution: “I think
Marvin is still learning and I think he can do so much more because
he’s capable of getting to the free-throw line. Just like the other
night in Denver, Marvin got a rebound and threw a ball away to
Allen Iverson instead of bringing the ball up the floor. He’s
capable of doing that.
“Can you imagine him pushing the ball up the floor the way Josh
Smith does? I want to see him do more of that. He needs to be more
of a playmaker for us instead of just being a periphery piece as he
does some nights.”
It’ll be interesting to find out what Rome can get out of Williams,
who has always been a candid, but not terribly exciting
interview.
