A call for crosswalks near park entrances

There are none between those two major streets, a distance of about a mile.
There also is no crosswalk at the other entrance to the park, on Lund Avenue, he said.
Gary elaborated on the need in a letter to the editor in Sunday’s edition.
Lorree said, “The park is visited by many families from various developments all within walking distance. I take my seven grandkids to the park with five of them under the age of 5. Jackson Ave is a very busy road with narrow shoulders. Lund Ave is the same. The only safe way to get to the park is to drive.”
The out basket: Doug Bear, spokesman for Kitsap County Public Works, said the county will study the need for crosswalks at the two park entrances, taking note of the number of pedestrians who cross.
Traffic engineers have lost faith in crosswalks at intersections without a traffic signal, feeling they give pedestrians an unwarranted sense of protection that can make them less cautious and lead to injuries rather than prevent them. Mid-block crosswalks are even worse. Bremerton took out all of its mid-block crosswalks a few years ago.
The county will also consider how much extra warning will be needed about pedestrians and the presence of crosswalks, it they add them, Bear said.

  1. 1 – Crosswalks are definitely needed at the park entrances.
    2 – A left turn lane on Jackson headed north into Marbeth Lane would be a very nice addition as I have almost been rear ended a number of times waiting to be able to turn into the park.
    3 – A crosswalk like Port Orchard installed with the flashing lights in the pavement would be ideal. They could also put up crosswalk ahead signs and a lighted crosswalk sign
    over the road.
    4 – I don’t know who told you that “Bremerton took out all of its mid-block crosswalks a few years ago.” , but they don’t know what they are talking about. Every Sunday while driving to church I cross over two mid-block crosswalks:
    a – between Burwell and Sixth Street on Callow Avenue
    b – between Sixth Street and Ninth Street on Callow Avenue
    5 – The Kitsap County Parks Department says that any road changes need to be addressed
    with the county commissioners.

My father-in-law, Gary Bangart, failed to point out that South Kitsap Community Park is one of the few parks (if not the only park!) in Kitsap County that does not have the surrounding roads, i.e. Jackson and Lund, marked with signs announcing the park entrance and have the traffic slow to 25 mph due to the park being there. Take a look at Long Lake Community Park. Traffic slows to 25 MPH. Why isn’t South Kitsap Community Park granted the same slow down? Maybe a crosswalk in the middle of the road is asking for trouble, but is putting out signs slowing traffic to 25 MPH and alerting drivers to a park entrance to much to ask for?

  3. In response to Doug Bear concerning the crosswalk in Port Orchard on Jackson/Lund park entrances…..Crosswalks WITH the crossing flags that are used downtown. This would help be seen, almost as much as a traffic signal.
