Gorst Glare May Get Attention

The in basket: Jim Lawson of Bremerton said in February, “At night, as I pass the Tremont/Clifton exit on Route 16 and round the curve at the top of the hill, I am blinded by the car lights coming up the hill from Gorst. I know they have some deflectors on top of the wall from Bremerton to Gorst. Why haven’t they, or why can’t they put deflectors on top of the wall at the top of the hill?”

If I recall correctly, political columnist Adele Ferguson make the same suggestion to me years ago. I know the glare screen between Gorst and Bremerton makes a huge difference in being able to tell how close you are to the barrier on rainy nights. But I hadn’t seen any new installations of it for a while. I asked if it’s still going in somewhere.
The out basket: Lisa Murdock, spokesman for the Olympia Region of state highways replied, “We do still install glare screen when funding is available. The safety funding to install items such as glare screen and rumble strips is dispersed related to collision history and solving the problems based on numbers and severity. Last biennium we spent our funding on several other projects installing left turn (lanes), ramp improvements, and rumble strips.
“We continue to monitor collision levels, define solutions and implement improvements,” she said. At this time there are several other locations with a higher priority than the Gorst area.”
She also noted that “it is hard to define the benefit and reduction of collisions due to the installation of glare screens . However, we will look for opportunities to install more glare screen in the Gorst vicinity.
