This box of 1965-66 sure is full of a few puzzling images!

Remember the problems with these really old boxes of negative sleeves is that they usually aren’t labeled with anything except “NEWS” or “SPORTS” and the date. So while I can usually give you just a tiny bit of info on these archive scans- now the info is even less than that for this box.

For example, take the images below of what appears to be a wheeled vehicle of sort being shot off the deck of an aircraft carrier. My goodness it would be nice to have just a few words to go with these photos…my guess is maybe they were conducting catapult tests??? That of course is just a guess.

Take a scroll through the latest scans. I have about two more posts left of this box and then maybe we’ll move on to the 90’s since some color images might be nice to see for a change. 😉

Still scanning my way through a box of 1965 & 66 negatives.

Item of note:

• I admit that I am a bit jealous of the kind of access photographers used to be given when it came to the Navy bases. To be able to document people assembling shells and ships was most likely really neat. Larry and I are of course not granted that kind of access these days.

I still have plenty of 1980’s negatives to share but today we are moving on to a box of 1965-1965 images.

Now the problems with these really old boxes of negative sleeves is that they usually aren’t labeled with anything except “NEWS” or “SPORTS” and the date. So while i can usually give you just a tiny bit of info on these- now the info is even less than that.

Items of note:

• The captive orca images just pull at my heart strings. When I saw the movie Blackfish and read the back story of the captured Puget Sound orcas I wondered if I would happen upon some images of them during this project. In this batch we have one being towed in a pen behind a boat from 1965 and then some shots from one in a pen from 1966. ****Note from longtime Kitsap resident and Sun reporter Ed Friedrich tells me that he thinks the orca is Namu and was on display in a cove along Beach Drive and “it was a huge spectacle and traffic jam as everybody drove there to try to get a look.”
• In the image of the average cost of education I zoomed in and the totals for the local schools are as follows: NK $474.38, Bainbridge $456.16 and Bremerton $464.16.
• The images of the Navy planes were on the same roll of film as the pics of the dolphins and sea lion- which makes me think they all must be from a tour of a local base that had not only planes but also a few marine mammal service members.

As never-ending and cumbersome as this negative scanning project of mine seems, I have to say how very fun it is seeing all these moments from the history of the community getting shared with others and the memories these photo are invoking.

I started this archive project because of my curiosity of the moments captured in all those boxes of negatives that were scattered in various nooks and crannies of the Kitsap Sun office. But the comments on the post and the emails in my inbox of people sharing their memories of photos and the photographers who took them is the best part of the whole project.

Here are a two examples of the memories that were shared from last week’s From The Archive post:

• This picture is of my grandfather that passed away almost 30 years ago. We just lost my grandmother the day after you posted this. Thank you so much. It’s brought us joy in our time of loss.
• The Snow Rabbits picture is of my sister, Alice Welch Eisenberg.  We were in 4-H rabbits and loved our bunnies.  Cliff McNair lived about a block from us and took pictures of Alice on a couple of different occasions for the Sun.  I helped her make the rabbits but didn’t want to be in the newspaper.

Another cool thing about this project is that former Bremerton Sun photographer Bob Reeder (who shot for the paper from 1976-1981 and recently retired from the Washington Post) has stumbled on to this blog project and is sharing stories of what it was like working for the paper back then.

Okay enough of my rambling. Yes we are still on a box of 1980 negatives but I’ve cracked open a box from the late 60’s so that will be coming up in a few weeks I promise.

This round of scans from a seemingly never-ending box of 1980 negatives includes:

• The apprehension of a very smiley suspected bank robber.
• A negative titled “BPD’s Secret Weapon”- yep that secret weapon seems to be new police batons.
• Ferry strikes…lots and lots of ferry strike related images. And from what I can gather from the negatives it looks like Bainbridge had a “stand-in” ferry service in the form of the Virginia V during the strike.
• Some tanks.
• A fire at the Sandpiper
• Some fellas participating in a “Run and Gun” which yes is people running AND gunning.

Yes I am still stuck on this one box of 1980 negatives…but the end is in sight since I can almost make out the bottom of the box…probably about three more blog posts worth and then I PROMISE I’ll move on to another year.

This round of scans includes:

• An adorable billboard marriage proposal (if you can’t make it out, the YES box is checked)
• Tracyton Beach Road construction, which I find interesting since that road has been in the news so much this past week.
• And I’m guessing the images labeled 100 cats are possibly from a hoarding situation, my favorite part of those series of images is the BPD officer smoking a giant cigar as he goes through the house- my guess is the photographer thought the same thing since there is just frame after frame of this cigar smoking officer. Yes I realize that 1980 was a different time and smoking was maybe a common “on the job” activity but it still took me by surprise.

Still very slowly making my way through one box of 1980 negatives.

The latest batch of scans includes quite a bit of snow hijinks, a waiter with an amazing mustache and some slightly inflammatory graffiti (which to be honest could actually be positive graffiti as well, I really shouldn’t be judging it).

I have opened a new box of negatives!

(Insert ooooohhhhs and ahhhhhhhhs here)

When I started this project people kept asking me to find photos of “cruising” in downtown Bremerton…

And well guess what, I found three sleeves of negatives simply titled “Gut” and “Gut Cruising”! So now I know they actually exist and hopefully a few more sleeves will surface as I continue to rummage through this box.

I have to admit, I am quite amazed at how many cars took part in this “gut cruising” phenomenon. It looks like a lot of fun and everyone likes seeing downtown Bremerton bustling with people.

One more note: I just love the shot  titled “Sports Nut.” Man, look at the size of that TV!?!?!? 😉

And finally finished scanning this box of late 60’s negatives…that’s not to say I don’t have a whole shelf of negs from those years left to scan but getting one box scanned is a pretty big accomplishment trust me!

I love the shot simply titled “4 Girls Walking Dogs”! It is just such a great “slice of life” shot.

Also the photos that are only titled “Brides Section” were most likely for a story on what a new bride needs to do when she gets married- you know like setting up home milk delivery and AAA for when her husband’s car breaks down…

Yet another batch from a box stuffed full of negatives from the late 60’s.

I always love the old photos from when various Navy ships arrive and the various drill team ladies are performing on the dock next to the ship high-kicking in their matching uniforms. It just looks like it was so much fun to photograph.

Also, who knew the Bremerton Sun made such a perfect paper airplane? 😉
