FRAMES: Photo Challenge #102 Wildlife STANDOUTS

Nice work on the annual wildlife challenge!

Remember there aren’t any winners or losers, I just pick a few images and ramble on about why they “standout” to me for various reasons.

The following photos will be published in the Sunday, November 13th edition of the Kitsap Sun.

Bird Reflection by Donna Ferris This image of Donna's was hands down my favorite of all the images entered. This frame has perfect composition with lovely saturated colors but most of all the subject matter is just amazing! Would this image be as strong as it is if it was just of the bird standing at the water and not the painterly reflection that Donna photographed? I'm not sure because this out-of-the-box capture gives the viewer pause because while yes it is obviously a bird at first glance there is just something different about it that needs to be thought about and getting the viewer to study an image instead of just glancing at it should always be a photographers goal. It is a gorgeous and well executed image.

Young River Otter At Rest In Liberty Bay by Bob Rosenbladt I love the details of the different textures of the otter and log that are on display in this frame. The composition is also really nice with the otter perched right in the middle of the frame.

Hummingbird Dive by Kent Ferris This is a beautiful stop action image of a hummingbird in mid flight and the focus is tack sharp showcasing the stunning tiny details of the feathers. The out-of-focus background hue really makes the small bit of green on the bird's back really pop and also ties the background to the subject really well.

Rabbit Snack by Kyle Boone I really enjoy the details of this rabbit's face as it is eating while Kyle snaps away freezing its dinner in mid-munch. While the lighting of the image is a little dark, I think it matches the mood of what might be some late in the day snacking for this furry friend. The composition if the image is also really nice with the lightly lit flora on the left to balance the rabbit on the right.

San Juan Orcas by Noelle Morris This frame of Noelle's showcases the beauty of the Northwest just perfectly by not only putting those orcas front and center in the frame but also by showing a bit of their habitat or location by including the beautiful backdrop of coastline and foreground of water. While images of wildlife up-close and personal without any distracting backgrounds and foregrounds are always appreciated, it really helps the moment by letting the viewer take in the surroundings as well.

FRAMES ~ From The Archives 1983: SK Bed Races, Roosevelt Field demo, Elvin Bishop and MORE!

Cracked open a box of 1983 negatives from one of the many shelves of archival images here at the Sun office. Here is the first batch of what will be many scans…

A few images found:

  • SK bed races.
  • Demolition of Roosevelt Field- which I had no idea stood so very close to Warren Ave. Also take note of how the bulldozer is just pulling the last of the stadium in on itself with cables.
  • Milk carton boat races…seriously there seems to have been a whole lot of fun events going on back in the day in this county!
  • A portrait of a girl leaping on the steps of Bremerton Jr. High simply titled “girl who named middle school”.
  • 80’s fashion shoots!
  • A woman getting the chance to dance with and then getting hugged by American blues and rock musician Elvin Bishop.
  • Poulsbo Summerfest

***Remember, the only information I have on these images is what is written on the negative sleeve which is then typed in beneath the photos seen below.

FRAMES ~ From The Archives 1988: a bran photo illustration, school dedications AND MORE!

Still posting from a box of 1988 images from the archives of the Bremerton Sun so here is the first batch of scans!

A few images found:

  • A photo illustration of “Branbo” which my best guess is for a story featuring the benefits of bran. The best part is we also get a glimpse at retired photo editor and current freelancer Steve Zugschwerdt as he was shooting the illustration.
  • Dedication of Bremerton High and West Hills school- which also apparently included a light-hearted moment of a man pretending to strangle himself with his tie…
  • Bainbridge High’s football stadium.

FRAMES ~ From The Archives 1988: Thomas Kemper Brewing, a presidential candidates daughter, a blimp ride AND MORE!

Just finished scanning a box of 1988 images from the archives of the Bremerton Sun so here is the first batch of scans!

A few images found:

  • Marketing photos of Thomas Kemper Brewing…which according to wikipedia: “Thomas Kemper Brewing of Poulsbo was sold to Hart Brewing (later known as Pyramid) in 1992. (Thomas Kemper had been founded in 1985 on Bainbridge Island, and began making soft drinks in 1990.)”
  • OC Registration
  • A lady driving with a parrot on her steering wheel…okay maybe she’s just parked but still seems a bit unsafe for the bird.
  • Aerial views of Bremerton from aboard the Pepsi blimp.
  • Presidential nominee Michael Dukakis’s daughter Andrea campaigns in Bremerton.
  • A swimming olympian from 1928

***Remember, the only information I have on these images is what is written on the negative sleeve which is then typed in beneath the photos seen below.

FRAMES: Photo Challenge #102 Wildlife

DEADLINE EXTENDED! Tuesday, October 25th is the final due date!

Okay after a hiatus of photo challenges and so many people telling me much they liked them and how bummed they are that they have been on hiatus I’ve decided to bring them back sporadically…maybe not one a month maybe one every other month or so.

And well it’s September and September has always been our wildlife challenge month…SO your challenge, if you choose to accept it of course, is to show me your BEST wildlife photo.

There is a wide variety of nature right outside of our doors here in Kitsap. So grab your camera (film, digital or even a simple iPhone) and get outside and show me what you see; be it birds, creatures with fur or those slimy snakes and toads hiding in the mud. Maybe you’ve recently been on a whirlwind vacation to Yellowstone this summer and shot a bazillion photos of bison wandering around doing their bison thing, if so show me the best bison of the bunch.

“Stand-Outs” be published in an upcoming edition of the Kitsap Sun.

Per usual you have a few rules/regulations:

My definition of wildlife is: animals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and/or sea creatures living in a natural, undomesticated state.

That means unless your cockatoo “Carl” has left the comfort of his cage and has joined the ranks of the local cockatoo flock foraging around Lions Park then I don’t want to see Carl’s photo.

***ALSO I AM NOT COUNTING BUG/INSECTS/SPIDERS as “wildlife”.

I always encourage you to shoot the challenge in the time-frame that it is posted, I will accept any photos of wildlife that you have shot in 2016, but they cannot have been entered for any of the other challenges that we have had.

You may send me a maximum of 5 photos for this challenge, so edit your work down to 5 images MAX shutterbugs.

Entries may be emailed to mreid@kitsapsun.com

As usual, here are some shots from our archives to get you thinking :

FRAMES ~ From The Archives 1962: SK at state tourney, Dry Dock 6 dedication, Armed Forces Day and More!

I found a very small box of 35mm negatives from 1961-1962 on the shelf by Bremerton Sun photographers.

A few images found:

  • South Kitsap basketball goes to the state tournament.
  • Dry Dock 6 is dedicated.
  • Snow…my there used to be a lot of snow and ice skating going on here in Kitsap.
  • The toll booth of the Manette Bridge…a whopping 10 cents to cross back in the day.
  • Armed Forces Day Parade.
  • Swim classes at the pool at Evergeeen Rotary Park in Bremerton.

FRAMES ~ From The Archives 1968-69: SK levy, Silverdale Hotel burns, Harvey’s Hot Butter Rum and MORE!

Here are a few more images from a box of 1968-1969 negatives by the photo staff of the Bremerton Sun:

***Remember, the only information I have on these images is what is written on the negative sleeve which is then typed in beneath the photos seen below.

A few images found:

  • SK High students with levy signs.
  • Ladies manning the phones at the headquarters for American Independent Party presidential candidate George Wallace.
  • My favorite image of this scanned group is the photo of kids in a boat looking picking up boards as the Silverdale Hotel burns in the background.
  • Harvey’s Hot Butter Rum and founder.
  • A portrait of a retiring ticket taker when cross Sound fares were only $1.80!
  • A lot of photos of Ice skating in these years which is intriguing to see because I can’t imagine lakes freezing over out here making ice skating a possibility.
  • Students listening to a lecture in their African American History Class at Olympic College.

FRAMES ~ From The Archives 1968: a chicken lays a giant egg, Gary Sexton, CK classroom addition, a toaster oven and MORE!

Here are a few more images from a box of 1968-1969 negatives by the photo staff of the Bremerton Sun:

***Remember, the only information I have on these images is what is written on the negative sleeve which is then typed in beneath the photos seen below.

A few images found:

  • A chicken that “layed” a large egg (yes sometimes news days were very slow even back then and photographers had a hard time when it came to spelling “laid”).
  • Gary Sexton and a dog.
  • Images from inside PSNS that were labeled “Armed Forces Day”.
  • Central Kitsap classroom additions.
  • A glimpse into the life of Safety Patrol kids.
  • Man builds his own pool table
  • Political signs and stickers inside the GOP and DEM headquarters
  • A toaster oven. No date, no title just some pictures of a toaster oven.
