Here are a few more images from a box of 1968-1969 negatives by the photo staff of the Bremerton Sun:
***Remember, the only information I have on these images is what is written on the negative sleeve which is then typed in beneath the photos seen below.
A few images found:
- SK High students with levy signs.
- Ladies manning the phones at the headquarters for American Independent Party presidential candidate George Wallace.
- My favorite image of this scanned group is the photo of kids in a boat looking picking up boards as the Silverdale Hotel burns in the background.
- Harvey’s Hot Butter Rum and founder.
- A portrait of a retiring ticket taker when cross Sound fares were only $1.80!
- A lot of photos of Ice skating in these years which is intriguing to see because I can’t imagine lakes freezing over out here making ice skating a possibility.
- Students listening to a lecture in their African American History Class at Olympic College.

***I also feel the need to put small plea on this post because of some slightly unscrupulous re-postings – if you are going to share these photos around social media and what not (which is totally fine) PLEASE credit the Kitsap Sun. These are our old but still copyrighted images and it is important to note that they are credited to us. ***

Wish I could remember the artists name… met him back in the 90’s when I had my bookstore downtown, and that picture (along with an article by Adele Ferguson) was in his scrap book. (She (Adele) confirmed to me that the picture was taken in the entrance lobby of the Dietz Building.) I probably still have his card and pamphlet somewhere in my files.
The “lake” that the skaters are on was actually part of Clare’s Marsh. The skaters in the second photo are skating where the Shell station and Cloverleaf Tavern are today. Lofthus Lumber was taken over by Parker and the Interlude Tavern is where Los Cabos Mexican restaurant is now.
The winter of 1968-1969 in the Puget Sound area was amazing not just for the snow, but for the bitter cold. (I remember my Dad watered our driveway and extended concrete patio during the school Christmas break and into January so my brother and I could sled on the long ice run that we made.)
This link is to an article describing in detail (almost 2000 words) the Seattle-area weather during the winter of 1968-1969:
