Jan. 11 is deadline for poster contest hosted by food co-op

Kitsap Community Food Co-op is hosting a poster contest to raise awareness about locally produced foods and encourage new members to join.

The group has been working since 2008 to bring a cooperatively owned grocery store for local and natural foods to Kitsap County.

In June, the co-op announced its plan to open a retail grocery store on the old East High School campus in Bremerton. The plan is to renovate and expand a 6,000-square-foot brick building on Wheaton Way that was once used as extra classroom space.

Submissions for the poster contest are due at midnight, Jan. 11, that’s less than one week from now. So all you blooming artists and illustrators out there, get cracking.

According to the group’s website, “The (winning) poster will stand alone in some locations, will live alongside brochures in an acrylic holder in others, and will hang on a wall with rip-off hang tags in others. We hope to plaster these all over the county!

“What would get YOUR attention if you were to see a co-op poster hanging in the community? You can design the poster in any way you desire, whether it’s digital art, your own original photography, or your kids’ crayon art.”

The winner will be chosen Jan. 12. The grand prize will be the winner’s choice of a limited-edition screen printed poster from Victory Gardens of Tomorrow, featured on the co-op’s website (apparently as inspiration for contest entrants). The handmade posters are from an artist in Oregon.

The co-op has an “A-Z Campaign” of reasons to join, which may provide inspiration. Or you may wish to check out the group’s slideshow at Flickr for more ideas. Or create your own inspirational poster that will make others want to become member-owners of their own store.

The only requirement is that you have the name “Kitsap Community Food Co-op” somewhere on the poster.

Submit your original artwork and/or photography, or provide adequate documentation showing permission to print/use without fee or limitation from the original artist.

Here’s the fine print: “Entering your poster design in our contest enables the Kitsap Community Food Co-op to use your images, designs and/or artwork without charge or limitation into perpetuity. We cannot not claim responsibility for any lost or damaged artwork or photography. Please allow 6-8 weeks for return of artwork.”
