ARCO station and ampm store proposed in Poulsbo

An ARCO fuel station and ampm convenience store could join the Sonic Drive-In at the corner of Viking Avenue and Highway 305.

A site plan review application has been filed for a 3,180-square-foot store, a nine-pump service station and 1,152-square-foot car wash on the 2-acre site, according to a notice distributed by the city Friday.

The station would be served by two underground storage tanks courtesy of Connex (you can rent Connex boxes here). Plans include parking for 11 vehicles.

BP West Coast Products submitted the permit application for the 22003 Viking Ave. property.

The city will accept comments on the application through Dec. 23. See the full notice below for details.

Poulsbo’s shiny new Sonic Drive-In made its long-awaited debut Wednesday.

Judging by the lineup of cars along Viking Avenue, and the police officer directing traffic, it was a successful launch.

Nothing seems to stir up excitement around here quite like the arrival of a new restaurant chain. So for those of you who braved the lines, I’m curious: What did you think?

What did you order? How long did you wait? Are you an old Sonic fan or was this your first time? Did it live up to the hype? Was it everything your taste buds longed for?

Poulsbo Sonic opening soon, but no date set

Poulsbo’s Sonic Drive-In looks tantalizingly close to opening, but fans of the fast food chain will have to wait a little longer for their burgers and dogs.

The opening has been delayed, according to a post on the restaurant’s Facebook page, and no official opening date has been set:

Sorry, folks, it turns out that after some delays, we have had to postpone our open date.

Don’t worry though, we are very close to bringing the tots, slushes, and ice cream we are known for to the wonderful people of Kitsap County.

Keep an eye on your local media outlets and this page to stay up to date on when we will finally be open.

(For the record, the developer for the Sonic told us in early August there was no set date for the opening, despite a report to the contrary.)

It has already been a long wait for Sonic devotees. News of the restaurant’s arrival trickled out more than a year ago, but construction was pushed back by changes to the site plan.

The building finally went up last spring and crews were busy at the property all summer. The Sonic is located at the northwest corner of Highway 305 and Viking Avenue.

Poulsbo Sonic getting built in a hurry

After months of inactivity, Poulsbo’s future Sonic Drive-In is getting built in a hurry.

Walls started going up last week at the site off Viking Way at Highway 305. Much of the structure took shape over the weekend. Workers were busy framing Sunday morning.

The highly-anticipated fast food joint was initially expected to open late last year. Alterations to the site plan delayed construction. The city issued a building permit for the project April 13.

The 2,150-square-foot restaurant will be somewhat unique for the chain. Last we’d seen, the building designs included a patio seating area with garage-style doors that could be rolled up during sunny weather and closed when it’s cold.

I’ll let you know when I hear an opening date.

Plan changes slow work on Poulsbo Sonic

Fans of Sonic Drive-In are going to have to wait a while longer to get their fix in Poulsbo.

Work on the future fast food restaurant is progressing at a snails pace this winter. According to the city, “ongoing changes to the site plan” for the Viking Way parcel are holding up the show.

The city released an update Wednesday on a host of construction projects underway around town.

The update includes information on the residential neighborhoods under development, and a spurt of downtown public works projects set to begin this month.

Sonic Drive-In approved for Poulsbo

The Poulsbo city planning department gave the green light Tuesday for a Sonic Drive-In restaurant.

Plans for the much-hyped fast food restaurant were submitted back in April. The Sonic will be built at the northwest corner of Highway 305 and Viking Way, near the Highway 3 interchange.

Cascade Development Group LLC. is spearheading the project. Columbia Property Managers LLC. bought the corner property in June for $1.25 million, according to assessors documents.

Cascade principal Richard Ramsey said the restaurant is on track to open by the end of the year. Site work could begin this summer.

The 2,300-square-foot floor restaurant will include indoor seating – a new design element for Sonic in Washington. Roll-up doors will be opened when the weather is warm.

“On nice days it will feel like a patio,” Ramsey said.

Site plans call for 34 parking spaces, including 16 large stalls for carhop service.

The Viking Way parcel was originally approved for a gas station, car wash and fast food restaurant. Cascade filed a revision to those plans that included only the Sonic.

The planning decision can be appealed to a hearing examiner. Documents are embedded below.

Plans submitted for Poulsbo Sonic

A Sonic Drive-In is one step closer to construction on Poulsbo’s Viking Way.

The city received an application for a proposed 2,148-square-foot fast food restaurant with drive-thru. The application requests a revision to the existing site plan for the property, which had been approved for a 3,900-square-foot convenience store, gas station and fast food complex.

The new site plan proposal includes just a Sonic restaurant and 30 parking spots. You can click on the graphic on the right to expand.

Patrons would have a few dining options. They could order from the drive-thru window or park in the lot and be served by carhops. The restaurant wouldn’t have true indoor seating, but it would have covered patio seating, with garage-style doors that could be rolled down during bad weather.

JWJ Group LLC. owns the property at 21895 Viking Way and is pursuing the site plan revision. A Seattle development firm is negotiating the purchase of the land and plans to build a Sonic there. It’s one of many Sonic locations slated for the Puget Sound region.
