New brewery planned in West Bremerton

badbulldogsThe former Grainger building across from Safeway could soon be home to Bremerton’s fifth brewery.

Silverdale residents Dave and Dawn Dodge (pictured) bought the Callow Avenue building last year and have applied for licenses to begin brewing in a portion of the 11,000-square-foot space. They hope to launch their Bad Bulldog’s Brewery as early as December.

Dave is a retired Arizona police officer who home brews beer and now works at Sound Brewery in Poulsbo.

“It was a blessing,” Dave said of landing his job at Sound, which has familiarized him with brewing on a commercial scale. “They’ve been really inviting to me.”

14034912_1412432445437392_2110010914126635088_nThe Dodges plan to build out their Bremerton brewery in stages. They’ll start by installing a 3.5-barrel brewing system in the lower level of the building and open a simple tasting room with a patio for outdoor seating.

Later the couple will add a full-scale tasting room one of the building’s street-level storefronts. A bar built around an opening in the floor will allow patrons to sip beers while watching brewers at work below.

Eventually the Dodges hope to transform the entire building into a beer-centric hub. The structure encompasses four separate commercial spaces with individual addresses, giving them plenty of room to experiment. They envision hosting a home brewers collective and perhaps a bottle shop.

It’s an ambitious vision, but Dawn is confident they can pull it off.

“When Dave decides to do something, he does it right,” she said.

Marijuana, not beer, was the Dodges’ initial plan for the building. They owned Emerald Coast Collective on Wheaton Way before it shut down at the end of June along with other medical marijuana dispensaries.

The couple applied for a license to place a recreational marijuana shop in the Grainger building, but were never approved. They joined a class action lawsuit against the Liquor and Cannabis Board with the hope of still landing a license.

If they prevail, Bad Bulldog’s Brewery could share the building with a marijuana store.

Manchester could be getting a microbrewery

10985869_1574322029508290_7102575816289966737_nTwo entrepreneurs hope to open a microbrewery and restaurant in Manchester by the summer of 2016.

Cody Morgan and Ludomir Wanot are co-founders of the aptly-named Manchester Brewing Co. Morgan, an avid homebrewer, is developing the beer lineup.

11009989_1556834387923721_1983697457931933585_nThe partners have begun applying for the necessary licenses. They’ve also picked a location, a vacant two-story building on Colchester Avenue.

Wanot said codes in Manchester require them to open a restaurant before they begin selling beer. They plan to install the brewery on the ground floor of the building and open the restaurant upstairs.

The duo have an investor lined up for the project and plan to launch a Kickstarter campaign soon.

Wanot said Manchester is a growing hub that seems primed for more business development.

“I think it will be a really nice crowd,” he said. “It’s a great area.”

What’s brewing: A newcomer to the Kitsap beer scene, Hartley rolled out Unicycle Ale in 2013, building the brand around his lifelong hobby.

Hartley, who also serves as a vice president of sales for a Seattle firm, brews and hand-bottles about 40 cases of beer a month, focusing on just three styles.

The Poulsbo Farmers Market is Unicycle’s main retail outlet, but Hartley has interest in opening a taproom somewhere in the county.

Viewpoint:

“This is all about learning the business of brewing, developing a brand and testing the market. So far, the response has been really solid.” — Darin Hartley

Kitsap on Tap: Slaughter County Brewing

Founded: 2012

Location: 1307 Bay Street, Port Orchard

Online: Facebook, @SCBC_Beer

Beer sold in: Taproom/pub, kegs

Signature beers: O’Cairdubhain’s Irish Stout, Gorst Light pilsner, Ol’ One Eye IPA

What’s brewing: After selling his software company, longtime homebrewer Scott Kirvan carved out a nook on the Port Orchard waterfront.

His brewery serves up English-style ales in an “Irish pub overrun by pirates.” A menu of hearty food helps attract customers to his South Kitsap outpost.

The colorful brewery name harkens back to the early days of Kitsap, when the county was called Slaughter. Kirvan plans to grow his brewery into a regional business and hopes to see more beer makers join him in South Kitsap

Kitsap on Tap: Rainy Daze Brewing

Founded: 2012

Location: 14974 Olympic View Loop Road, Silverdale

Online: Facebook, @RainyDaze Beer

Beer sold in: Kegs

Signature beers: Rainy Rye IPA, Belgian Bastard (NW IPA with Belgian yeast)

What’s brewing: Partners Mike Montoney and Mike Painter started Rainy Daze in 2012, but zoning issues forced them to close their taproom after two months. That didn’t keep their hoppy beer from creating a buzz in brewing circles.

The Rainy Daze partners are searching for a new location while picking up as many wholesale accounts as they can handle. Montoney recently closed his auto repair business to focus on brewing full-time.

Viewpoint:

“I’m a hophead anyway. I figured I could bring that style out here, make it not too unapproachable, but give them a lot of flavor.” — Mike Montoney

Founded: 2011

Location: 650 NW Bovela Ln, Poulsbo

Online: Website, @soundbrewery, Facebook

Beer sold in: Taproom, kegs, bottles

Signature beers: Monk’s Indiscretion Belgian ale, Tripel Entendre Belgian tripel, Humulo Nimbus double IPA

What’s brewing: The Northwest craft beer scene is dominated by hoppy pale ales, which makes Sound Brewery’s offering stand out. Sound specializes put a modern touch on traditional Old World styles (it swept the “Abbey-Inspired Ales” category at the 2014 Washington Beer Awards), and produces nearly 30 varieties.

Because of its unusual selection, Sound markets farther afield. Its beers can be found across the Pacific Northwest and in several Canadian provinces. The brewery ships 45 kegs a month to Japan. Sound is expanding production to keep up with demand.

Viewpoint:

“Our motto is ‘tradition liberated.’ That means, to us, doing traditional styles really, really well, and then doing our own spins on traditional beers that are a little outside of the box.” — Mark Hood, founder/manager

While growing, Silver City remains focused on maintaining quality and serving the local market. The bulk of its sales are still made in Kitsap, though Silver City beer can be found around the I-5 corridor and across the Olympic Pensinsula. Small quantities are shipped to Japan. Continue reading

New Kingston brewery plans summer opening

blog.breweryKingston could have a new watering hole this summer.

A new brewery called Downpour plans to open in the former Sacks Feed & Garden. Downpour Brewing applied for a microbrewery license Thursday for 10991 Highway 104.

We haven’t heard back from the owners yet, but the brewery’s page on Facebook suggests it could open in early July. Downpour would be the 11th licensed microbrewery in the county and the sixth in North Kitsap.

Slippery Pig Brewery is sliding into downtown Poulsbo

blog.slipperypig

Slippery Pig Brewery, known for such eccentric offerings as the Dandelion Bitter, is planning a move to downtown Poulsbo.

The brewery applied for a conditional use permit from the city to allow it to relocate to 18801 Front Street. A liquor license application was also submitted for the location.

The building is currently home to the Delhi Palace restaurant. A Delhi Palace manager confirmed the restaurant is looking for a new space.

Slippery Pig has been housed at a farm on Finn Hill since its founding in 2011. Owner Dave Lambert said he expected to have keys to Front Street building on Tuesday. He plans to triple beer production at the downtown location. Along with brewing, Slippery Pig will offer beer tasting and live music, and may sell farm products.

The brewery  organized a Founders Club to raise money for the move. See the Slippery Pig page on Facebook or the website for more information.

The city is taking comments on the conditional use permit application through May 15.
