Kingston won the Class 2A West Central District swimming and diving champions at Hazen High in Renton.

The Bucs, who won their first Olympic League title last month, scored 195 points, barely edging out Steilacoom, which scored 194.5.

Kingston had three titles. Quincy Walker won the 100 free title in 50.49. Ethan Fox won the 100 breast in 1:02.75. They were both part of the winning 400 free relay team along with George Dalton and Tim Gallagher in 3:27.76.

Olympic’s Ross Burchell won the 200-yard freestyle title.

Burchell touched the wall in 1 minute, 51 seconds, edging Klahowya’s Mason Heaman’s 1:51.78.

Burchell also won the 500 freestyle title in 4:55.90, just ahead of North Kitsap’s Nathan Ramey (4:58.43).

Bremerton’s Nathan Rubie won the 100 fly title in 54.32.

Olympic’s Ross Burchell is seeded No. 1 in the 200-yard freestyle for the upcoming Class 2A West Central District boy swim and dive meet.

The meet is at Hazen pool in Renton. Friday’s prelims begin at 10 a.m. and Saturday’s finals are at noon.

Burchell, a freshman, has a seeding time of one minute, 50.79 seconds — right ahead of Klahowya freshman Mason Heaman in 1:51.34. Burchell is also seeded second in the 500 free.

Bremerton’s Nathan Rubie is the top seed in the 100 butterfly in 54.70 while North Kitsap senior Thor Breitbarth is also seeded first in the 100 freestyle in 50.28 — ahead of sophomore Quincy Walker of Kingston and Heaman (third). Breitbarth is seeded second in the 50 free.

Kingston freshmen Ethan Fox and Tim Gallagher are seeded second and third in the 200 individual medley. Gallagher is also seeded second in the 100 backstroke and Fox is seeded second in the 100 breaststroke. Nathan Ramey, a freshman from North Kitsap, is the third seed in the 500 free.

Also, Kingston’s and North Kitsap’s 200 medley relays are seeded second and third, respectively. Kingston is the top seed in the 200 free relay as well and is the second seed in the 400 free relay.

South Kitsap juniors Dylan Macabitas and Jason Gleason are both eyeing district titles later this week.

Macabitas is seeded first in the 100-yard backstroke in 54.30 seconds for the West Central District meet, Friday and Saturday at Curtis High School in Tacoma. Macabitas has already qualified for state. He’s also seeded second in the 200 freestyle.

Diver Gleason is seeded second in the 1-meter, and has also qualified for state. The state meet is Feb. 19-20 at KCAC in Federal Way.

The top six times in each event will allocate to state even if a state time isn’t met. Right now, SK’s 200 medley relay and 200 free relays are seeded sixth according to the psych sheets.

The list of West Sound swimmers who have made the cut times for their respective state boys swimming meet (4A/3A/2A) is growing.

The list also includes South Kitsap junior diver Jason Gleason. Gleason scored a 371 in his latest 11-dive qualifying meet last week.

It should be noted that the majority of West Sound’s swimmers are freshmen (nine), with just two sophomores, three juniors, and two seniors.

The state meet is Feb. 19-20 at the King County Aquatics Center in Federal Way.

A handful of Bainbridge girls swimmers and divers were named to the All-Metro League team for the recently completed fall season.

Bainbridge’s honorees were Candice Rosen, Cammy Rouser, Ani Duni, Hannah Tonsmann and Olivia Dow. Rouser was the Spartans’ highest finisher, place second in the one-meter diving.

The Spartans finished third overall at the Class 3A state swimming and diving championships.

It’s the calm before the storm here at the King County Aquatics Center in Federal Way.

It’s championship Saturday for girls swimming and diving and the Class 2A is the first session of the three-session meet. 3A will be up this afternoon with 4A getting a bit later start at 7 p.m.

Let’s talk 2A. We have a ton of Kitsap athletes competing and its North Kitsap that is looking to put together its strongest meet in years. Coming into the meet on Friday, media scribes had pointed out the scoring and had the Vikings finishing third. That won’t happen today, but they could still finish among the top 10. NK would need its everyone to swim lights out to gain more points and that can certainly happen.

The Vikings 200 medley relay is in the finals, right now seeded eighth and can only move up. Serita Solis is into the A finals for the 50 free and the 100 butterfly, Isabel Hendryx is in the B finals of the 100 freestyle and the A finals of the 100 backstroke, the Vikings’ 200 free relay is in the A finals and Hannah Uffens is in the B finals of the 100 backstroke. Ellie Gallagher is in the B finals of the 100 breast. UPDATE: Vikings finished seventh overall. Hendryx placed fourth in the back while Solis was fourth in the fly and fifth in the 50.

Kitsap’s best chance for a state title comes in Kira Crane. The sophomore from Klahowya is seeded second in the 100 freestyle. She’s also in the 50 free so who knows if she can pull off the double in the sprints. UPDATE: Crane DQ’d in the 50 (flinched at the start) and was second in the 100.

Kingston’s Claudia Velie is looking to give the Buccaneers a medal in the A final of the 100 breaststroke. UPDATE: Velie placed fourth

Olympic’s Chloe Partsch is in the A final of the 100 butterfly. UPDATE: She finished seventh.

UPDATE: Bainbridge won the 200 medley relay in a meet record 1:46.72. Candice Rosen finished sixth in the 200 free, Allison Murphy was fifth in the 200 IM and Ani Duni was fourth in the 50 free.

UPDATE: In the 4A, South Kitsap’s Aspen Monkhouse finished fifth in the 50 free in 24.75.

The Class 2A preliminary session of the girls state swimming and diving championships are so far going quite well for our local swimmers Friday morning.

Here’s how it stands now about halfway through this meet. Our top finisher right now is Kira Crane of Klahowya. The sophomore is seeded second in the 100-yard freestyle in 53.91 seconds, right behind top seed Makenzie Norman of Cheney High in 53.15. Yup, that’s not much of a difference which means Crane has an excellent chance to grab her first state title — and I’m guessing many more to come — in Saturday’s finals. Crane is also seeded fourth in the 50 free along with North Kitsap senior Serita Solis who is seventh.

Speaking of North, this could be the Vikings best outcome since I started covering state swimming in 2001. North could wind up among the top four teams once it’s all said and done. Solis is also fifth in the 100 butterfly. They’ll pick up some more team points as freshman Izy Iral is among the top 10 in the 100 fly, as is fellow freshman Isabel Hendryx in the 100 free. The Vikings 200 medley relay is seeded seventh and we haven’t swam the 200 free or 400 free relays yet. NK’s 200 free is the top seed.

Olympic’s pair of freshmen are also getting it done at the King County Aquatic Center pool.  Chloe Partsch is seeded eighth in the 100 fly and 12th in the 200 IM. Danielle Snyder qualified for the B finals in the 200 free. The Trojans 200 medley relay is 16th.

Kingston’s Claudia Velie, yet another freshman, will swim in the B finals of the 200 IM.

UPDATE (12:01 p.m.): OK, here’s how the meet finished. A bit of unfortunate news for the Vikings as their 400 free relay was disqualified as the leadoff swimmer flinched at the start and she was called for it by the officials at the start. But, NK did get the 200 medley and 200 free into the finals. The 200 free is seeded fifth. Isabel Hendryx of NK is seeded fifth in the 100 back while Hannah Uffens is ninth.

Kingston’s Velie is seeded seventh in the 100 breast to give the Buccaneers a swimmer into the main event.

For Oly, its 400 free relay is seeded sixth, a good spot for the young Trojans who have two freshmen and a sophomore competing.

UPDATE: Bainbride’s 200 medley relay of Allison Murphy, Olivia Dow, Candice Rosen and Ani Duni) has the No. 1 time out of the prelims in 1:48.96, bettering its seeding time by nearly two seconds. Rosen is also seeded sixth in the 200 free and Murphy is fifth heading into the finals of the 200 IM. Duni is the seventh seed in the 50 free.

Duni came out in the 100 breast and broke her own school record and is seeded third heading into Saturday. Rosen continued her amazing afternoon by making another final, this time as the third seed in the 100 butterfly. Carina Laukaitis is seeded sixth in the 200 and eighth in the 500 to give the Spartans some points in the distance events. All three of Bainbridge relays are among the top three.

And just as a little side note, us “media” folks have scratched out the finals (remember, math is not our strong suit) but it looks like Lakeside is the favorite to win the team title with 301.5 points, followed by Mercer Island (274) and Bainbridge (251).

Of course, that’s on paper. We all know that what happens in the water is a different story … stay tuned!

UPDATE: Aspen Monkhouse of South Kitsap qualified for the finals of the 50 freestyle in the 4A session.

Monkhouse was scratched from both the Narrows League and West Central District meets the last two weeks due to an illness that also forced her to miss more than a week of school. Monkhouse suffers from Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS) as well as a vocal chord dysfunction that closes her airway, but SK coach Cliff Rousell said her most recent sickness wasn’t related to POTS or her vocal chords.

In the 100 free, Monkhouse is seeded 11th after finishing third in her heat in 55.27.

I thought I’d take a few minutes and let you know where our top swimmers are seeded heading into the state meet.

But first, here’s a look back at last weekend’s district meets.

North Kitsap’s 200 free relay won the Class 2A WCD meet record, and broke the school record by four seconds, in 1:44.81, at Hazen High in Renton. The old record was 1:45.25 in 2010. Check out the link here to see a video of the Vikings — Isabel Hendryx, Izy Iral, Dannica Hennings, Serita Solis — win. The video was shot by RJ Iral. North finished third overall behind Liberty and Port Angeles. The relay is the No. 1 seed heading into state with a time of 1:43.24, but it will be a battle with Port Angeles who is right behind in 1:43.54.

Speaking of NK, the Vikings have a very strong, very young team but are led by senior Solis.  She finished second at district in the 50 free (seeded sixth at state) while Klahowya sophomore Kira Crane is the second seed in the 50. Solis is the second seed heading into the 100 butterfly with the top spot going to Port Angeles’ Jaine Macias. NK’s Isabel Hendryx, a freshman, is seeded third in the 100 back. The Vikings 400 free relay is also seeded third.

Klahowya sophomore Kira Crane is the second seed in the 50 free and the third seed in the 100 free. It was her sister, Kelsey, that dominated the longer distances in her four years at Klahowya, winning state titles along the way. Crane will be joined by teammate Hallie Turk as well.

Olympic has two freshmen adding to the youth movement for Kitsap swimmers, Chloe Partsch and Danielle Snyder, as well as Kingston freshman Claudia Velie. Partsch is among the top six in the 100 fly while Velie is among the top six in the 200 IM.

At the 4A district, Aspen Monkhouse of South Kitsap is seeded third in the 50 free and sixth in 100 free. However, she didn’t swim at district and I’m not sure what her status is for this weekend. She’s had breathing/health issues in the past.

For Bainbridge in 3A, the Spartans’ Cammy Rouser finished second in the diving and Ani Duni was second in the 100 breast. Bainbridge finished second overall behind Lakeside, who looks like the team to beat at state.

Speaking of Bainbridge, this will be the final meet for head coach Greg Colby. Colby and his wife are headed back to his hometown of Boise, Idaho. Colby has been the girls coach the last 24 years.

“We’re going to hang out with my parents a little bit,” he said. “This is a great group to go out with, trouble free … I’ll miss being around but I’m looking forward to the change.”

Klahowya sophomore Kira Crane clinched her second Ironman status last week as she qualified for the state swimming meet in all eight individual events.

Crane was an Ironman last year, following in the footsteps of her older sister, Kelsey, who was a four-time Ironman and a state champion for the Eagles.

A few other swimmers are close; freshman Chloe Partsch of Olympic, Isabel Hendryx of North Kitsap, a freshman, and North Kitsap senior Serita Solis have qualified in five events. Also, Port Angeles’ Jaine Macias has seven state qualifying times.

In 3A, Allison Murphy of Bainbridge is ranked No. 1 in the state with her time of 2 minutes, 12.51 seconds in the 200 individual medley.

This week’s top performers showed up big time with the pressure on, which is why they are being honored this week. With the playoffs looming, I suspect this will just become harder and harder to chose just three athletes …

Week 5

Matt Becker, Olympic football: The senior threw for 116 yards and was 7 for 7 with two touchdowns and also ran for 157 yards on 10 carries and a touchdown to help lead the seventh-ranked Trojans to a 48-7 win over Sequim.

Grace Smith and Tatiana Tubberville, Central Kitsap swimming: Smith, a junior, and Tubberville, a sophomore, each won Narrows League 3A swimming titles on Friday at Foss High School. Smith won the 100-yard butterfly in 1 minute, 2.48 seconds while Tubberville won the 500 freestyle in 5:37.11. Tubberville was also third in the 100 free.

Kamie Coryell, Bainbridge girls soccer: Coryell, a senior, notched a hat trick against West Seattle Thursday as the Spartans open Metro League tournament play on Oct. 31.
