INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — The National Federation of State High School
Associations has rejected a proposal that would have allowed it to
conduct national championships in golf and cross country.
Though 22 member state associations were in favor and 21 were
against it, a two-thirds majority was required.
Executive director Bob Gardner said this week’s vote shows that
state championships are still the preferred goal in high school
sports.
“The NFHS will continue to support the more than 7.6 million
student-athletes involved in high school sports whose dream each
year is to win a state title in their particular sport,” Gardner
said.
Since the original declaration by the membership against national
championships in 1934, the federation has not supported or
sanctioned national competition that leads to a single team
champion. In 1979, there was a 38-9 vote against a proposal to
conduct national invitational competitions in golf, tennis, and
track and field during the summer.
The Indianapolis-based federation has directed development of model
national championships in several sports for consideration by its
members.
The WIAA executive board also made changes to the state golf
tournaments.
The 4A and 3A tournaments will remain in Spokane — where all the
tournaments were held last spring — and the 2A/1A and 1B/2B sites
have been moved to Tacoma.
The sites are; 4A girls at Downriver GC, Spokane; 4A boys at Creek
at Qualchan GC, Spokane; 3A girls at Liberty Lake GC, Spokane; 3A
boys at MeadowWood GC, Spokane; 2A girls at Lake Spanaway GC,
Spanaway; 2A boys at The Classic GC, Spanaway; 1A boys and girls at
The Home Course, Dupont; 1B/2B boys and girls at Meadow Park GC
Lakewood.
