Here’s a story that could develop into something interesting.
The U.S. Education Department said Thursday disabled students get
equal opportunities (or equal alternatives) in athletics.
You can read about that here.
The WIAA provides a few disabled alternatives such as a wheelchair
events at the state track and field meet and disabled races at the
state swimming meet.
The WIAA released this in response on Friday:
“The WIAA is aware and is in support of the recent policy of
inclusion issued by the US Department of Education Office for Civil
Rights on Jan. 25, 2013 to provide opportunities for disabled
students to participate on athletic teams. The WIAA and its member
schools have a strong history of providing equal opportunities for
all students and is committed to continuing these efforts. The
Association will remain involved in discussions on this issue and
will assist its member schools, work with the National Federation
of State High School Associations (NFHS), other state associations,
and various Washington State agencies to continue to provide
opportunities for all students.”
This is a story we’ll be looking into and seeing what impact and
changes are in store for local schools.
Time to do away with all public school sports. Time for the community to accept the full role of sports. The Dept of Education has destroyed the education system.
In past years, I have observed deaf students successfully playing basketball in the CK School District. A district supplied deaf interpreter was there signing coaches and referees instructions to one student I saw playing.
