Hersh Opens Olympic Music Fest Lineup July 3 and 4

The Olympic Music Festival‘s  2010 season will kick off July 3 with pianist Paul Hersh performing pieces by Debussy, Schumann, Mozart and Grieg.

Hersh’s solo concerts at 2 p.m. July 3 and 4 begin the festival’s eight-week season, which concludes Aug. 21 and 22 with Hersh joined by clarinetist Teddy Abrams and violist Mara Gearman.

Festival founder and music director Alan Iglitzin makes the first of six appearances in the Week 2 program, July 10 and 11, along with Hersh, bassist Stephen Schermer and the rest of the “Festival Quartet” — violinists Charles Wetherbee and Korine Fujiwara and cellist Clancy Newman.

Highlights of this year’s 27th season of “Concerts in the Barn” should include the Festival Quartet’s July 17 and 18 performances of quartets by Shostakovish, Beethoven and Dvorak; the July 24-25 Mozart Festival, with performances of the three “King of Prussia” quartets by Iglitzin, violinists Elisa Barston and Megumi Stohs and cellist Amy Barston; and another round of quartets by Shostakovich, Beethoven and Dvorak, performed on Aug. 7 and 8 by Iglitzin, violinists Stohs and Andrea Segar and cellist Jonathan Lewis.

The festival grounds, a former dairy farm that now plays host to donkeys, horses and extensive gardens in addition to the music programs, is located at 7360 Center Road north of Quilcene.
