Port Orchard police chief: criminals like warm weather too

Should summer actually kick in around here, Port Orchard Police Chief Al Townsend’s got some tips to get you prepared for the crime wave that comes with it.

We’ve discussed on the blog before the fact that crime goes up as the temperatures do. So be safe and take heed of these tips. Here’s Al:

“Over the last several weeks we have seen an increase in thefts from cars.

Here are a few tips to help keep from being a victim:

1. Always lock your car.  While this may seem obvious, many of the victims we encounter did NOT lock their cars and in some cases actually left their keys in the car.

2. If you don’t keep your car in the garage, try to park under some lighting.

3. Take down the obvious valuable items such as GPS devices, iPods, and radar detectors.  If you have a high dollar radio in your car, remove the faceplate if so equipped.

4. Take other valuable items such as backpacks, bags, golf clubs, etc., and place them in the trunk out of sight.  Even little things like a cup holder full of coins can be enough to draw attention to a would be thief.

We respond to many of these calls where the thief did hundreds of dollars in damage only to steal less than $50 worth of items.

In 2010 we had 38 automobiles stolen in the city.  Following some of these same strategies above can help prevent your car from being one of them.

And if you do have a garage, make use of it!

Finally, if you see someone that looks like they are prowling the neighborhood, call 911.  It might save you or your neighbor from being a victim.”
