Crime and Justice Week in Review: June 19-25

Local prosecutors and police officers I’ve talked with agree that this past week was probably the busiest of the year in Kitsap’s crime and justice world.

I’ve rounded all of the stories up below.

June 23, 2006
New Treatment Shows Hope for Meth Users
There may be a new solution to the scourge of methamphetamine addiction that is ruining lives and families in Washington state. A promising new medical treatment for methamphetamine and cocaine addiction received rave reviews from a Pierce County community treatment leader this week following the first phase of a pilot program that has so far shown a 94 percent success rate.

‘Aggressive’ Armed Robber Hits Second Local Bank in 2 Days
An aggressive bank robber who loudly threatens his victims with a firearm struck for the second time in two days Friday, hitting a Washington Mutual Branch on Mile Hill Drive in Port Orchard.
Authorities say he is the same man who robbed the Kitsap Bank branch on Wheaton Way in East Bremerton on Thursday and May 30.
“It’s the same guy,” said Special Agent in Charge David Gomez of the FBI in Seattle.

State Patrol Identifies Man Shot by Deputy
A man who was shot in the leg Thursday by a Kitsap County sheriff’s deputy has been identified as William A. Jones, 32, of Bremerton. Washington State Patrol troopers released his identity this afternoon as part of their investigation into the shooting, which took place as authorities were trying to get Jones to come down out of a tree he had been in for several hours.

Vandals Ravage CK’s Clear Creek Trail With Graffiti, Sign Damage
The Clear Creek Trail is the latest victim in a recent spate of vandalism in Kitsap County.
In the latest episode, vandals tore down signs, flipped over tables and left obscene and hate-filled graffiti along the walls of All Star Lanes bowling alley near the trail.

June 22
Highway 3 Reopened Following Rollover Accident
A tow truck hooks to a tractor-trailer that rolled over earlier today. All lanes of Highway 3 and Navy Yard Highway have been reopened after crews cleared away a tractor-trailer rig that rolled over on its side earlier this afternoon. The accident scattered debris, chunks of scrap metal and a 19,000-pound generator on the roadway, witnesses said. At one point, traffic was backed up all the way to Silverdale. Traffic also backed up on Navy Yard Highway past Puget Sound Naval Shipyard.

East Bremerton Bank Branch Robbed — Again

A bank branch in East Bremerton was robbed for the third time in seven months this afternoon. Bremerton police are searching for the suspect, who was last seen wearing a red mask and riding a bicycle a few blocks from the bank.

Kitsap Sheriff’s Patrol Car Destroyed by Flames

A Kitsap County Sheriff’s Office car was destroyed Thursday afternoon when it went up in flames on the 1600 block of Riddell Road. No one was injured. A deputy was responding to calls for backup for an alarm at the Kitsap Bank branch at the intersection of Wheaton Way and Sylvan Way.

June 20
Five People Injured in Manette Bus Crash
Five people were injured Monday morning when a Kitsap Transit bus crashed into the concrete corner of a Manette market. Kitsap Transit said the driver momentarily lost consciousness before the crash. The bus knocked over a telephone booth before hitting R K Mart at about 9:50 a.m. It was unclear why the driver lost consciousness.
