BPA’s ‘Amadeus’ wins critics’ ‘Best Play’ award

Amadeus,” Bainbridge Performing Arts‘ ambitious winter-spring 2016 production, has been recognized by the South Sound Critics Association as the “Best Play” of their 2015-16 season.

“Amadeus,” directed by Kate Carruthers and featuring an award-winning Supporting Actor performance by Luke Walker (Mozart) and a nominated Lead Actor effort by Nelsen Spickard (Salieri), was one of two BPA offerings nominated for “Best Play,” along with the 2015 holiday-season production of “Mary Poppins.”

The production, which the Kitsap Sun’s review called “rich and incredibly detailed,” featured an evocative set by Will Langemack, period costumes by Barbara Klingberg and atmospheric lighting by Tess Malone, is technically a non-musical. It does feature a soundtrack of music by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and other composers of the era, but normally is perforDSC_0592_grandemed with that soundtrack pre-recorded.

That’s where the ambition comes in. BPA employed a chamber orchestra, with fresh orchestration by Jon Brenner, and a choir/ensemble, both live on stage with pianists Josh Anderson (the musical director) and Elizabeth Faye.

BPA’s “Amadeus,” according to the Sun’s review, was “crisp and comprehendable, draped in luxurious visuals and accompanied by exquisite playing and singing throughout.”

(For the record, the Sun and its theater reviewer, Michael C. Moore, are not affiliated with South Sound Critics Association. The Sun annually publishes its own “best of” survey, but culls its nominees from the calendar year — January to December — instead of the fall-to-spring theater season. The Sun will run its “best of” compilation at the end of 2016.)

Shannon Burch, a frequent contributor at Paradise Theatre, won Best Actress honors for her role in the Gig Harbor company’s “Next to Normal.” The chamber musical was another Best Play nomination, and also earned a Supporting Actor nomination for Taylor Herbstritt and a Supporting Actress nod for Ashley Roy.

Spickard was one of three actors with Kitsap ties to earn Best Actor nominations. The others were Pete Benson (for BPA’s recent “Bard at Bloedel” production of “Much Ado About Nothing“) and Jeffrey Bassett (for Paradise’s “Scrooge the Musical“).Joseph Grant, playing Willie Loman in the Lakewood Playhouse’s “Death of a Salesman,” was the Best Actor honoree.

Lisa Mandelkorn, who played the title role in BPA’s “Mary Poppins,” joined Burch among the Best Actress nominees. Jenna McRill, who’s appeared in several shows at Paradise, was a Best Actress nominee for her title-role performane in “Romeo and Juliet” at Tacoma’s New Muses Theatre.

Bremerton’s Diana George was a Supporting Actress nominee for the Lakewood Players’ production of “Noises Off!”

Other best play nominees came from Tacoma Little Theatre (“Second Samuel”), Lakewood Players (“Death of a Salesman”) and Tacoma Musical Playhouse (“Mary Poppins”).

Paradise moves to yet another interim stage

Paradise Theatre‘s production of “Nunsense” will go on as scheduled this weekend … just not on the company’s new stage.

Week 2 of the show will by hosted by the Gig Harbor Eagles club at 4425 Burnham Dr. Showtimes will be as scheduled, with 7:30 p.m. curtains on Feb. 26 and 27 and a 2 p.m. Saturday matinee on Feb. 27, as well.

Permitting delays have prevented Paradise from occupying its interim home at 3114 Judson St. Performances of “Nunsense’s” opening weekend were hosted by the Best Western Plus Wesley Inn and Suites in Gig Harbor.

Paradise has been working on the Judson Street site since losing its former venue, on Burnham Drive north of town, to new development.

The possibility remains that “Nunsense” actually be performed in the Judson Street venue for the final weekend of the run, March 4 and 5.

Paradise postpones Gig Harbor re-opening

Paradise Theatre‘s production of “Nunsense” — its first show since moving to its new downtown Gig Harbor location — has been postponed, according to co-artistic director Vicki Richards.

The show was set to open Feb. 5. But delays with construction permits have set back preparations for the new venue at 3114 Judson St., necessitating a push-back for opening night. Richards, who fronts the company with her husband, Jeff Richards, said they hope to open the show on Feb. 18, and determine how the run will fall into place as soon as possible.

“It’s all a moving piece right now,” Vicki Richards said of the project to convert Paradise’s new spac20160113_203250e into a proper performance venue. “We just got to a point with all the permits and the contractors where we were cutting things too impossibly close” to make the Feb. 5 opening.

“It’s coming along,” she added. “The stage is built, a lot of the work is done. We’re doing what we can.” Some work couldn’t be undertaken, though, until the building permits arrived and materials could be ordered.

Paradise lost its home of more than a decade at the end of last year when the Fishermen’s Hall building off Burnham Drive was scheduled for the wrecking ball to make room for new development north of Gig Harbor.

Richards said the Feb. 18 opening will continue Paradise’s opening-night wine-and-cheese nosh prior to the show. The cast (pictured above, clockwise from top left) includes Courtney Turnley, Sylvia Shaw, Nita Wilson, Ashley Roy and Shannon Burch.

Paradise is far from the first area company to postpone an opening in the past few months; their delay is for different reasons, though. Since November, four other shows have been delayed by illnesses or injuries suffered by cast members.

Paradise announces all-musical 2015-16 season

Paradise Theatre in Gig Harbor will go all-musical for their 2015-16 season, which will begin at their longtime Fishermen’s Hall home off Burnham Drive, but could well finish in a different venue.

The new season is being promoted at performances of Paradise’s current show, “Seussical,” which runs through July 11 (a review of the June 20 performance can be found here: http://www.kitsapsun.com/entertainment/theater-paradise-takes-a-colorful-turn-with-seussical_51604748

Into The Woods” will kick off the seven-show season, followed by a holiday production of “Scrooge, the Musical.” Those might be the only shows on the new schedule to be performed at Fishermen’s Hall, which is destined for the wrecking ball to make way for a new development. Paradise’s artistic directors, Jeff and Vicki Richards, have been told they must strike set by the end of 2015, and they’re actively looking for a temporary new home even as they shift a $1.2 million capital campaign into high gear, with the goal of building a new performance space in or around Gig Harbor.

The complete season looks like this:

Sept. 18-Oc t. 10 — “Into the Woods

Nov. 20-Dec. 12 — “Scrooge, the Musical

Feb. 5-27 — “Nunsense

March 11-April 2 — “The Fantasticks

April 22-May 14 — “Next to Normal

June 17-July 11 — “The Little Mermaid

August 5-27 — “Fiddler on the Roof

The company also will put on their annual Haunted House at Fishermen’s Hall in October.

We’ll keep you posted on Paradise’s efforts to find new digs for 2016, and on the progress of the capital campaign.

Paradise pulls a coup by grabbing ‘Spamalot’ for next summer

Gig Harbor’s Paradise Theatre, which annually pulls off an ambitious seven-show season in addition to its regimen of acting and dance classes and youth productions, announced a 2012-13 season that includes the first Kitsap-area production of Monty Python’s “Spamalot.”

The zany musical comedy, based on the film “Monty Python and the Holy Grail,” is slated for the theater’s early-summer slot, opening June 21, 2013 and running through July 7.

Other shows set for productions at Fishermen’s Hall next season include: “9 to 5: The Musical” (Sept. 21 to Oct. 7); “Oliver!” (Nov. 23 to Dec. 9); “Of Mice and Men” (Jan. 18 to Feb. 2, 2013); “Cabaret” (March 8 to 24); “Steel Magnolias” (April 19 to May 5); and “Forever Plaid” (Aug. 2 to 18).

Of course, Paradise is still busy with its 2011-12 season, performing “Anything Goes” through July 1, and finishing up with “Annie Get Your Gun” Apg. 3 to 19.

Paradise will conduct general auditions for its 2012-13 shows by appointment on July 14, and asks that auditioners prepare a 1-minute monologue and 1 minute of a Broadway-style song. Appointments can be requested by e-mailing Vicki Richards at vrichards@paradisetheatre.org.
