Monday Morning QB – Odds and Ends

1 – Cliff Lee leaves the Mariners and gives up three HR’s and loses a complete game 6-1. Do you think he brought over the “hole in the bat” curse to the vaunted Rangers lineup? Plus, he gave up 6 runs which only happened once with the M’s. Don’t expect either of those to last long.

2 – Justin Smoak was 1-8 with 3 strikeouts over the weekend against the Yankees. Not quite the sizzling start the Mariners hoped for. I watched him play and like his swing (like I have an eye for talent!). I am guessing he will eventually be a fine player, but it might be in 2011. Mariner fans be patient (our motto since 1977).

3 – The NFL is around the corner. All has been quiet on the Seahawks front although that will soon be changing. The quiet before the storm.

4 – The Groz is back – Dave Grosby is coming back to 710 and now it’s got more pull as an RSPN affiliate. He will team with Kevin Calabro in the afternoon spot. I’ve always liked the Groz and I believe he will add value to what I think is now the best sports station in town. I do like and listen to them both, however the ESPN rights which bring John Clayton and others is too good.

5 – The World Cup is over! The World Cup is over! Spain won and I should be happy…I have Spanish blood through Columbia. Viva Espana and let’s get back to our regularly scheduled programming.

World Cup Token Post

I admit I was watching the World Cup this morning.

I was on the elliptical machine and three of the televisions had it on and the others were on infomercials. So I was stuck. Korea was playing someone and at least there were a few shots on goal. I admit, never having played or followed the sport, I can’t get into it. I appreciate greatly the athleticism of the players and the passion of the fans. That’s what makes it a terrific event. I just don’t have interest. I will admit I will probably tune in for a little while to watch the good old USA and see if they are “Ghana win.”

Sorry…I couldn’t resist.

My pal from the gym, Pete tells me that Uruguay is unscored upon in the World Cup. That is a tremendous feet. Too bad we can’t transfer that over to the Mariners pitching and defense (no disrespect for the pitchers who have been very good). Then we might be a .500 team.

Good luck to the Yanks today (not New York, but Americans). I will probably peek in and see if I can get enough “stuff” to blog on it again.

NFL Training Camp is 5 weeks away…

World Cup, Celtics and Mariners, Oh My…

Okay…I watched about 15 minutes of USA vs. England on Saturday as I was waiting to go to my nephew’s graduation. That was about all I can handle. I understand there is a big thrill for us in tying England because we get a point. I must just be old-school American but I think only wins are good. I’m still committed to trying out some local (Pumas and Sounders) soccer in person, but watching it on TV just doesn’t do it for me. Sorry.

I did however watch the Celtics win 2 of 3 to take a one-game edge in the NBA Finals. I will take Kobe, The Big Ticket, Paul Pierce, Ray Allen and even Pao Gasol over World Cup soccer any day. Terrific game last night with the Celtics hanging on for dear life by making big plays when they counted. It was a must-win for them with the Lakers at home the rest of the way. Still pulling hard for the Celtics, but I think they must get Game 6. It may be too much to overcome Kobe on a Game 7 in LA.

The Mariners have to begin the re-tooling process now. Don Wakamatsu’s honeymoon period is over. He will survive the season, but his long-term tenure is in serious doubt. For as cohesive as the Mariners were last year, they are back to the dysfunctional group they were in 2008.
