Seattle Sports Stars Over the Decades

I realized as we started a new decade a few days ago, that I embarking on my fifth decade of feverishly following sports.  I remember 1973 (8 years old) watching a still young Supersonics franchise led by Head Coach Bill Russell. The Seahawks and Mariners didn’t exist, so I adopted the Miami Dolphins and Cincinnati Reds until the local teams showed up.  It was 1974 when my dad took me to my first University of Washington game against the hated Oregon Ducks (and we won).

As the Seattle Sports Star of the year turns 75 in 2010, I thought I would put together my own personal players of my decades.  I look forward to your “nominations” and push back. That’s what makes sports fun. Please make sure to comment on this site so everyone can participate, comment, and debate…

  1. Okay Dan, I will give this a shot. I agree with you on some of your picks but I will disagree with you on some others just to make it interesting. I also added UW Basketball since I am a big fan of that team as well.

  2. Great job, Mike! I can’t believe I forgot Husky hoops! Some quick thoughts…

    – I’d go James Edwards for Husky Hoops in the 70’s
    – Bruce Bochte was a close 2nd for me behind the Cruzer.
    – Totally agree with 80’s Husky Hoops. Chris Welp is a friend of mine, so I’d hate to make him mad!
    – Edgar over Griffey????

    Thanks for contributing!

  3. Dan – I seriously thought about going with James Edwards and probably should have listed both him and Hawes. I guess I went with Steve Hawes because he put up better numbers. I chose Bochte because he had better numbers than Cruz. I am okay with both but I decided to be different and went with Bochte. I went with Edgar only because he stayed true to Seattle and did not leave. I probably should have listed Edgar, Griffey and the Big Unit together for the 90’s. I thought about putting Tui in there but it was hard because he primarily played in 1999 and 2000. Since he took UW to the 2001 Rose Bowl I should probably list him for the 2000’s instead of Jake.

  4. Mike – I like your picks. Even those that you wanted to differ are excellent. That’s what makes this fun. I was thinking of the best of each of the professional teams that played their entire careers in Seattle. How about these:

Sonics – Fred Brown and Nate McMillan
Seahawks – Steve Largent and Walter Jones
Mariners – Edgar Martinez (honorable mention to Jay Buhner who had a cup of coffee with the Yankees)
    Storm – Lauren Jackson

    Dan
