Governor Chris Gregoire Proclaims 17 November 2010

Congratulations Washington State!

Our Governor Chris Gregoire has done it first – proclaims November 17, 2010 Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease Awareness Day – the first governor in our nation to recognize the need to bring awareness to a deadly and mostly preventable disease through a Gold Standard World COPD Day.

Washington State progressive leadership lives on- thank you, Governor! She dared to be first.

Thank you

More later… Sharon O’Hara

  1. @Sharon – I don’t see how Christine “dared” to do anything. If she wanted to be daring, why not draw attention to something like Propionic Acidemia, a genetic disorder to which there is no cure and no funding for research. A disorder that affects my nephew.

All CG did was say “people who smoke are going to have bad lungs, and a pretty hard time breathing and/or living”

If she stood up and said “WA State is going to lead the nation and the world in genetic research for cures to uncommon ailments that affect human-kind, and we are going to be a tax-haven for all medical research facilities that move their research and jobs to Washington so they can invest more of their money on finding cures!” Well, I would stand up and declare her a hero for that.

For this, I say – woopedeedoo… tie a green ribbon on a tree for someone with Bronchitis, and gently remind them not to smoke… again… She is no hero here.

  2. Steven…Thanks for writing and mentioning ‘Propionic Acidemia’ – I’ve never heard of it until now.
Take a look here – http://www.pafoundation.com/ – research IS being done for it.

Nothing happens without someone bringing awareness to it – as you just did here.

    Your idea …
““WA State is going to lead the nation and the world in genetic research for cures to uncommon ailments that affect human-kind, and we are going to be a tax-haven for all medical research facilities that move their research and jobs to Washington so they can invest more of their money on finding cures!” … is a good idea.
Write and ask her about it. Write to our legislators…make them aware.

Fact is, the genetic form of emphysema (COPD) is only 1% of COPDers yet they are the only ones with ongoing research according to National Jewish, the leading pulmonary hospital in the USA. The other 90% get no research dollars.
Hip, hip, hooray for medical research!

Cystic Fibrosis medical condition is small in numbers but they are mighty in passionate medical people and patients/families working to bring awareness and research dollars to find a cure…their ‘WHATEVER IT TAKES’ 2010 slogan to bring awareness and find a cure for Cystic Fibrosis should be a rallying cry for all of us to bring awareness of medical conditions we care about.

Thanks for writing … Sharon O’Hara
