What on Earth are we going to do with the former East High School campus?
Efforts to revive the school district property, which was also home to Bremerton Junior High School, have failed to this point.

But this place has a proud history. There is also another bright side: the Bremerton Teen Center and a low-cost dental clinic are now located at the campus. There’s still talk of demolishing the 125,000 square feet of mostly rotting classrooms. Plus, in a surprising move, the State Legislature this year kicked in $1 million in improvements for the school’s revered gym.
On Tuesday at 6 p.m., we will meet inside that gym (3102 Wheaton Way) to discuss the campus’ past, present and future and we’ll tour the area. Special guests for our latest Kitsap Sun Story Walk include:
- Rick Walker, East High School class of 1974 graduate and one of the greatest basketball players to come out of Bremerton.
- Aaron Leavell, teacher who started in Bremerton in 1997 and rose through the ranks to become the school’s superintendent.
- Patricia Hennessy, who ran for a time the now-defunct Youth Wellness Campus, an attempt to revitalize the property with a focus on arts and athletic education.
- Chuck Stark, former Kitsap Sun sports editor, who sees potential in the campus’ athletic future and wonders if city and school officials could do more to make that idea a reality.
To conclude the story walk, staff from both the Bremerton Boys & Girls Club and the Lindquist Dental Clinic will be on hand to give tours of both facilities.

I am all for restoring this property. A teen center or Coffee Oasis would be wonderful!! Someplace where kids can hang out in a safe environment. Also, it seems it would make a great homeless shelter.

having attended east high from 69 to 73 i witnessed greatness ,whether it was basketball or wrestling from les eathornes running offense with such names as arena, walker,gibler,the hegland bros,just to name a few . to vern simmons dan knott and david milovich being coached by a truly great man mr stelson the memories are worth saving forever , why not turn it into a veterans rehab center just a thought ,knight forever

THERE WERE A BUNCH OF GOOD PLAYERS THAT PLAYED AS KIDS FROM
THE MANETTE AREA ALONE THAT HAD TALENT. THERE’S TWICE THE AMOUNT OF PLAYERS PLAYING SOCCER THAN BASKETBALL ON THE FIELD.
I have thought about this so much & was hoping it would reopen for a good cause. Its perfect for a homeless shelter but I really like the idea in a earlier comment about a Veterans rehab center. It had showers lots of rooms and a cafeteria. I went to school there from 66 to 70 as did my brothers. Lots of great memories. Shame to see it just sit there.
