Bremerton Employee Killed

A Bremerton public works street service specialist died from injuries sustained in a work-related accident Wednesday.

“It’s hard to know what to say. It’s just such a sad day,” said Phil Williams, Bremerton’s public works director. “It’s a very sad day for the city of Bremerton.”

Dean Westcott was with a Bremerton street crew preparing to repave the road at the intersection of 11th Street and Callow Avenue.

The city initially reported Westcott was likely hit by a city vehicle backing up around 8:30 a.m.

Westcott was taken to Harrison Medical Center in Bremerton, then transported to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.

The intersection was closed for several hours Wednesday, then re-opened to traffic in the afternoon.

Williams said public works personnel, as well as Westcott’s family, were able to meet with chaplains from the police and fire department on Wednesday. “Beyond that we’re still putting together a longer range view of what we need to do,” he said.

Public works crews continued to work on Thursday, though on lighter duty.

  1. I’m so sorry –
    …but…what happened?
How could anyone get hurt on a seemingly straightforward job?
No one was hurt during the building of the second Narrows Bridge… the first time, I believe, no one was killed during the construction of any bridge of that magnitude.
Knowing what happened here won’t bring Dean Wescott back but should keep anyone else from being hurt or killed for the same thing.
It couldn’t have been someone backing up…not with the back-up and side cameras most big trucks have…
    Condolences to his family…

  2. When you are behind a dump truck and bent over and another vehicle backs into you, it is possible. Unfortunatly the media does not know the whole story only the people involved and law enforcement really know and I am sure they are not giving all details to the press. I did not see it happen but I am in viewing distance of where the accident was and the road work and know some city workers. The city REALLy needs to get better organization. No flagers, just guys in the middle of the road trying to direct traffic. The city is still out here today trying to figure out what happened! Wescott family, my thoughts are with you.
