Port Orchard taking over police patrols on Bainbridge?

Port Orchard Mayor Lary Coppola said he’d be willing to have his police replace the Bainbridge Island Police Department – as long as there’s a profit for P.O.

As police reporter Josh Farley noted in his blog, Coppola floated the idea at a recent Port Orchard planning meeting after hearing rumblings on B.I. that the city may cut its police department to save money.

“We wouldn’t do it unless we were going to make extra money,” Coppola said.

Coppola said P.O. Police Chief Al Townsend “seems to think we can do it.”

Port Orchard may import their police force via boat, which is a much quicker way of getting to BI than driving all the way up to North Kitsap to cross the bridge.

The notion of Bainbridge renting out Port Orchard cops hasn’t yet reached the stage of formal discussions, but Coppola said he plans to bring the issue up with Bainbridge Mayor Darlene Kordonowy in the near future.

  1. Rent-a-cops from Port Orchard? Give me a break.People in Port Orchard and elsewhere are probably having a real laugh over that one.

  2. WHAT A JOKE!!!! Port Orchard is a dump with so much of its own stuff going on that should be better patrolled. To think they could handle going elsewhere?!?!?! It is no offense to the police officers, just the way they do things. I called once about something going on in front of a school and the dispatch told me they couldn’t get to it because they usually only have one or two officers on patrol at any given time. Perhaps that is different now, but even if it is we need our own officers to stay here and help keep Port Orchard from falling completely into chaos.

  3. Really, those first two posters are quite the clowns, aren’t they? In many locations law enforcement is provided on a contract basis. Officers are sworn, uniforms adjusted, etc. And of course extra officers would be hired to fill such a role, Coppola isn’t suggesting that PO police would exit to work on BI and leave the city without coverage. Get a clue you two.

  4. Instead of hiring extra officers to come here from PO,why wouldn’t BI just continue to pay our own?If our police force is reduced due to budget cuts, there isn’t going to be any money to hire others.Where is the magical savings HarCol?

  5. HarCol,
Actually contracting out police services is the exception not the rule. I think it may make sense on new cities that are starting up without any capital or infrastructure. However for established cities I don’t see the cost savings. Any contract you have needs to have each service spelled out and a cost associated with it. ANY government agency in this economic times would gladly take over another’s services for a PROFIT. No one will do a job for you & lose money or break even. Heck, even Bainbridge could take over other agencies to make money. Why isn’t THAT being discussed as a way to add to the city coffers? Kitsap County is facing possibly laying off or losing deputies the same as Mason County. Maybe Blackwater would be interested…

Rather than contracting out, it might make better financial sense to work with neigboring cities to COMBINE resources. There are many neighboring cities in King County that do just that. The problem here is that Bainbridge is geographically isolated and combining police forces would not be feasable. Closest would be Poulsbo or Suquamish Tribal.

I think if anyone actually made a list of what BIPD does, responds to or is expected by the citizens, you could then try to attach a cost for those services. Then ask other agencies what they would charge to do those same services 24/7. In the end, you would find that it makes absolutely no financial sense whatsoever to contract out those services.

  6. Old Salt, have you read the BI Police Blotter lately? Even the eagles on BI are rowdy. I wonder if someone has told Stephen Colbert about them?

Eddie Haskell, thanks for stealing one of my aliases. Now I have to start over, awaiting moderation.

  7. Good evening. I’m John Haydon. For your information the Port Orchard Police Department has reported the following incidents, on Bainbridge Island: Nah. I don’t think so.

  8. Acid Blotter ~~ If required, you will sing the POPD intro or lose the gig. That’s show biz.

2,200 YouTubers have seen the saga of the bitv Crime Reporter doing the crime.

  9. Cub Reporter~~ Since only about a thousand people saw the show that week there must be some who are wondering why your panties are in such a bunch. I’m thinking of posting the clip on Youtube so your legions of fans will have a reference point, but in the meantime, here is the complete script. You are welcome in advance, and thanks for your continued viewership. It means a lot to me and I always enjoy your comments.

A RESIDENT REPORTED THAT POLITICAL SIGNS OF A PARTICULAR TONE THAT HE HAD PLACED IN VARIOUS SPOTS AROUND THE ISLAND HAD BEEN REMOVED BY PERSONS UNKNOWN. THE SNEAKY THIEVES GOT AWAY WITH QUITE A FEW OF THE MANS HAND STENCILED SIGNS BUT HAD YET TO TARGET THE TWO ACROSS FROM SAFEWAY, THE ONE UP THE STREET BY THE CHURCH ON SPORTSMENS CLUB ROAD, ON THE LEFT HAND SIDE IF YOU ARE FACING SOUTH, OR THE ONE ON NEW BROOKLYNN BY WOODWARD SCHOOL, OR THE ONE ON MILLER ON THE RIGHT HAND SIDE OF THE ROAD JUST BEFORE 305…THE INVESTIGATION CONTINUES…

  10. One night returning home from a party, I managed to get lost, and I stumbled across a vacant lot where there was a huge pile of old political signs similar to the ones in the Youtube video . I planned on returning the next day with a camera but in the morning I had such a hangover I couldn’t find my way back. I’ve looked for the site several times over the months but without any luck. It was somewhere near Gazzam Lake.
