Higher bus fares, fewer buses

Kitsap Transit is planning a public meeting on Thursday to discuss raising fares and cutting routes.

One possibility that will likely make ferry commuters unhappy is the proposed elimination of some bus services to the Winslow ferry terminal. Increasing bus fares by 25 cents probably won’t thrill riders either.

Public Invited to Weigh In on Bus Fare Increases, Service Cuts

Kitsap Transit has scheduled a series of public meetings to discuss proposed fare increases and service cuts.

The agency is seeking to make up a $200,000-per-month budget shortfall that it attributes to soaring fuel, medical and retirement costs.

The fare increases would boost the cost of a bus ticket from $1.25 to $1.50, add $5 to the price of monthly passes and bump vanpool fares by 2 percent. That could bring in an extra $50,000 per month.

Service cuts could save the agency $40,000. Possibilities include eliminating buses to the last ferry served and stopping service at 8 p.m.; lopping buses to the first ferry currently served and starting later; not operating on Sundays; or trimming service from 11 hours a day to eight hours on Saturdays, Sundays or both.

Kitsap Transit plans to slice $10,000 in administrative costs and increase prices for passes issued to Puget Sound Naval Shipyard workers under the Federal Transportation Incentive Program. Higher prices, which are expected to net $100,000 per month, have been approved by the transit board and will take effect on Oct. 1.

The fare increase, after public meetings and a second reading of the resolution in May, would begin in August. Service changes would begin in September.
