Crash victim released

UPDATE: The Bainbridge cyclist struck by a truck yesterday was released from Harborview Medical Center in Seattle today.

The 60-year-old suffered a concussion and some scrapes and bruises, but appears to avoided more significant suffering, according to Bainbridge police.

Police said today that the truck’s driver, a 23-year-old Poulsbo woman, was found to have alcohol on her breath and “evidence of drinking inside of the vehicle,” police said today.

Police said she checked the cyclist on the ground, then left “as she heard emergency vehicles approaching.”

Hit-and-run sends cyclist to hospital

BAINBRIDGE ISLAND – A 60-year-old Bainbridge man was flown to Harborview Medical Center Tuesday afternoon after being hit by a truck on State Route 305, according to the Bainbridge Island Police Department.

The man was riding a bicycle northbound on the highway in the left turn lane at Hidden Cove Road when a truck, driven by a North Kitsap woman of unknown age, struck him from behind at about 3 p.m., police said.

The crash forced the man’s head under the rear tire of the truck, and the man, who was wearing a helmet, was airlifted. Police said that early reports from the hospital were positive, and he was expected to survive.

“It looks like the helmet saved his life,” said Bainbridge interim police chief Mark Duncan.

After the crash, the woman stepped out of the truck, checked the man briefly, then left the scene, police said.

Officers caught up with the woman and she was arrested on suspicion of hit-and-run and vehicular assault. Alcohol is believed to be a factor in the crash.

She was taken to the Kitsap County jail, where she’s being held on $100,000 bail.

Traffic was detoured around the crash site for about two hours.
