I talked with Pumas coach James Ritchie for a few minutes (and by a few minutes, I mean almost an hour) about the upcoming invitational tryouts this weekend at Gordon Field. The team will be going Saturday (9 a.m. to noon, 2-4 p.m.) and Sunday (9 a.m. to 1 p.m.). Expect to see between 40-60 players.
Since the Pumas are always dealing with the Premier Development League’s overage rule (the team can have no more than eight players 23 or older), I wanted to find out what players off last year’s team would fit the overage category.
Here are the list of players who are overage AND have invites for this weekend’s tryouts: Kyle Johnson, Mark Lee, Taylor Hyde, Steve Mohn, Matt Friesen, Greg Miley and Chris Andre.
Ritchie can’t say for certain that all these guys will be looking to play in Kitsap again this season, but expects to see most of them this weekend. If you are wondering, last year’s backup goalkeeper Zac Lubin is underage.
Here are some familiar names who won’t be back for one reason or another. Some you already know about, some we’re getting new information on.
David Gray (playing in Scotland), Dan Scott (playing for Tampa Bay Rowdies), Bryan Burke (playing for LA Blues), Bryan Meredith (playing for Seattle Sounders FC), Warlen Silva (in Brazil), Graham Davidson (in England), Nik Besagno (in school, playing for Washington Crossfire), Tye Perdido (in Hawaii) and Kendell McFayden.
Ritchie also said it’s unlikely that Sam Roca or Kendell McFayden, little-used reserves on last year’s team, will be back. He’s unsure about starters Robby Christner and Elliot Fauske, but they seem iffy at best.
The Pumas are also holding a tryout in California on March 17-18. Ritchie expects around 40 players to attend, mostly through invitation.
