People for Puget Sound must continue. It educates us about the nature of our Sound, motivates us to protect it, and serves as a forum for action to protect our animals and our environment. Even if PPS needs to operate on a shoestring budget for a while, with just a few volunteers who keep the web page and the information flowing, and the name and the forum alive, then it should do so. PPS will inevitably grow again. It’s mission is too important, and there are too many people involved in and concerned about the Sound, for it not to.

I’m in Italy with the Navy, and I’ll be returning to Poulsbo in three years. Having traveled and seen a lot, what always impresses me is how educated and how engaged Sound residents are with the health of our home. And we should be. It’s a beautiful place with lots of life and a great variety of life. It’s both a blessing and a responsibility to be living in the Northwest.

PPS has evolved into an institution greater than a few people. Though I’m not privy to the personal politics occurring within the leadership of PPS, I do know that such politics should not lead to the demise of an organization that’s critical to the health of the Sound. Please keep People for PPS going, even if that means that, for now, it’s smaller.

UPDATE, Sept. 13

For some different perspectives on the demise of People for Puget Sound:

Reporter Lynda Mapes interviews Denis Hayes of the Bullitt Foundation and others in her story in the Seattle Times.

Mike Sato, longtime communications director for People for Puget Sound, offers his viewpoint in his blog “Salish Sea Communications.”

Alf Hanna recalls the good work done by People for Puget Sound in his blog “Olympic Peninsula Environmental News” and includes this terse observation:

“Tom Bancroft’s comments to the press about not knowing the financial status of the organization are simply not accurate. There is nothing more needing saying than that I was there, on the board when he was hired. He knew full well what the situation was. He’s a smart guy, who knows how to read a financial report. But this isn’t about Tom. It’s about the Salish Sea.”
