Amusing Monday: EPA video contest focuses on water
July 6th, 2009 by cdunaganMore than 250 people submitted creative videos in a contest promoted by the Environmental Protection Agency. The idea was to “inspire environmental stewardship and educate the public on ways individuals can improve water quality in their community.”
Agency judges named one winner in the over-one-minute category and one in the under-one-minute category. I’ve reviewed the two winners along with 22 honorable mentions.
My personal favorite was a video about marine debris called “Get the Drift” by Taylor James Evans and Erin Patricia Woods of Honolulu, Hawaii. You may view that video at left.
My other favorite was a clever short feature dealing with automobile pollution called “It’s not the Same Dad!” by Michael Ohlsen of Tallahassee, Florida.
The judges’ favorite in the shorter video category was high on images dealing with oil in water and encouraging people to check their cars for leaks. The video, called “Protect Our Water — Check Car for Oil Leaks,” was submitted by Lucas H. Ridley of Trenton, Georgia.

We originally named the video “plastic bags blow” but the EPA gave us a call and told us that the title was too “racy” for the government, so we changed it. I think that title change took away from the humor. We would have loved to keep the original name!
