Amusing Monday: Comic strip jabs lightly at environmental issues

February 23rd, 2009 by cdunagan

Arctic Circle is one of the rare comic strips that blends humor with current environmental issues while managing to avoid the harsh rhetoric of environmental activism. You can view Arctic Circle and other comic strips at the Kitsap Sun’s Comics Kingdom Web site.

Alex Hallatt, the artist, emigrated from England to New Zealand in 2003 and began writing Arctic Circle in 2005.

The strip is about a trio of penguins who emigrate from Antarctica to the North Pole and find themselves confronted with some of the same problems they left behind. Rounding out the cast of characters is a middle-aged polar bear, a gullible lemming, an intellectual snow bunny and a ruthless Arctic tern.

“When I first thought up the strip, I based it in the Arctic because I wanted a blank canvas for my characters,” Hallatt said in a brief biography. “Penguins are funny birds to begin with and moving them to the northern hemisphere created a fantastic creative situation for me.”
