After four training runs, Bremerton’s Bree Schaaf looks to be competitive on the Whistler Sliding Center course. Of course, she figured to be. It’s the track she’s most familiar with and she and brakeman Emily Azevedo, the former track star from Chico, Calif., placed sixth in a World Cup race here last season.
Schaaf’s best time was 53.96 seconds on Saturday. It was the eight-best time during the first run. She had the sixth-best time in her second run (54.17). On Sunday, the Olympic High grad posted the seventh-best time (54.00) on her first run and ninth-best (54.20) on the second run. So she’s been consistent, which is a good thing. She said she’s got more speed in her, but I’m sure the other bobsledders are thinking the same thing.
After four training runs (there’s two more today), Canada’s Kallie Humphries has established herself as the one to beat. Humphries has posted the top time in three of the four runs and she was second in the fourth. Her times: 53.24, 53.60, 53.32, 53.20. Teammate Helen Upperson has had the fastest time, 53.16 on her first run Sunday, and has also been consistent.
The others who’ve stood out include (no surprise) the Germans. Sandra Kiriasis has been between 53.50 and 53.74 on all four of her runs and Cathleen Martni has had a best of 53.59 with her others in the 53.80s. Shana Rohbock, a gold medalist at Salt Lake, is the top hope for the Americans and she’s training well with a best of 53.48. Erin Pac of the U.S., a medal hopeful, was all tears after her second run on Monday night. She’s battling a hamstring injury and she’ll likely take today off to make sure she can compete on Tuesday.
I think those are you medal favorites. And if you believe in body language and all of that, I’d throw Bree into the mix. I think she’ll be ready to rock (and hopefully not roll).
