We constantly strive to improve the way we connect with you and provide news and information, including discussions on Twitter and Facebook to scrutinizing our comments policy and creating a searchable crime map.
But we know we’re not perfect. Maybe really, really close …
Which comes to the point of this blog and this post.
Who better than you, our readers, to tell us what you want?
We created this blog as a place where you can find out what’s new with our site, talk with us about it and listen to your suggestions about how we can make our sites more useful to you.
Is there public information that we can get and post on the site that you’d like to see (see some examples in our Information Center)?
Memorial videos to place with obituaries? New features on our obituaries such as guest books?
Would you like us to create a searchable map with information about sex offenders in your neighborhood?
Would you like us to do more videos?
Information about things to do and places to see within driving distance of our area?
E-mail and text alerts for breaking news or weather? A daily or weekly round up of headlines sent to you?
We’re open to discussing any ideas you have.

Your sports section is the absolute worst. No scores, standings, anything remotely a sports section that would grab the interest of anyone, least of all a sports fan.
August 7th, 2009 at 7:29 pm
Jim, in addition to scores and standings, is there any other kind of sports content you’d like to see in that section? I’d love to hear more ideas.
Our sports staff of four focuses on sports that happen in Kitsap, primarily high school sports, but we can look into ways to see if we can get that content from other sources.

Speed, speed, speed.
I’m about to give up the on line paper as it is so time consuming to load each page, upload any comments, then a long time to return again to Home. I have cable with 6 Mbps download so I don’t think that is the problem.
August 7th, 2009 at 8:15 pm
Sorry, “a long time” is relative”. I’m talking about 45 seconds every time I navigate a click in the Sun.
August 7th, 2009 at 9:25 pm
I’d like to see more up-to-date stories. Some stories stay on the “front page” for several days and there are typically only a couple of new stories on there in the mornings. Also, list the death announcements, births, and divorces like you used to. The archives are very difficult to find most of the time.
August 7th, 2009 at 9:34 pm
Although we have a “paper” subscription, I really enjoy reading comments left on blogs and in response to articles. After returning from vacation or just a few days away, I can’t find what has happened during the week I was gone. Please make it easily accessible to check in to the blogs and news comments for previous days. Special thanks to Chris Henry for her updates.

It would be great if “The Rail” was online, and if you could post the day’s BKAT schedule
August 8th, 2009 at 7:31 am
I like that editors and reporters will reply to reader comments. It feels like this is a community newspaper — and the readers are part of the community.
I get around the typical internet lag time in loading and reloading pages by right-clicking the news stories and selecting “Open in new tab”.
You asked about videos. Yes.
As to content: I live in a small town for a reason: I prefer the community and human touch. I can get the raw news from the big sources.
August 8th, 2009 at 8:26 am
I’ll say it again,we should really have a community type forum.Yes I know there is a forum here, but where is it?
It is buried, and it should be easier to access (find ie a regular link at least somewhere on the Sun’s main page)
There are other things going on in this area that we may want to talk about than just news or what ever the Sun wants to talk about.
For instance, really, where is a truely good pizza place in Bremerton since there is no Spiro’s?Or like,”Hey,Im going to the M’s game tonight, anyone feel like meeting before the game for a beer?”
Ahh yes,how are you going to moderate this site? There are filters that can be put in place for swear/slang words. Not to mention I’m more than positive there are many good people out there who would volunteer to police up these boards.
Remember, this is not just the Sun’s town, its all of our town.I think it would be a great way to get to know people a little better, and make our community just a little better.
August 8th, 2009 at 10:22 am
Sharon,
We do strive to get as much new local news as we can. You can also find new stories and background on our staff and reader blogs at http://pugetsoundblogs.com.
Also, one of the features we’re working with to try to get more stories and information from our readers is something called Newsgarden. We’re testing it out on the Bremerton community page, but you also can find it at http://kitsapsun.serramedia.com. Let us know what you think.
As for searching for archives, are you encountering problems with our search that we can fix or has there been missing content?
Sally,
We’re working on getting that rail information up. We also have event information on our calendar at http://calendar.kitsapsun.com
Chris,
We will continue to talk with you and others on the comments and training everyone to shoot and edit video.
Shawn,
I’ve popped a link to the forum on that bar below the main homepage stories and you can access it directly at
http://forums.kitsapsun.com. Few people used it even when we had a link in the navigation bar. Are there things we could change to that forum to make it more inviting? Perhaps we should also look into building a better site map?
Also, we’ve opened up our blogs to our readers and welcome people to apply so they can guide their own conversations and talk about your hobbies, passions, whatever. We just ask that it’s appropriate for a family paper and follows some general ethical guidelines (http://pugetsoundblogs.com/reader_agreement/). If you or anyone you know is interested, send me an e-mail at adice@kitsapsun.com

How about some follow up on your stories. For instance, whatever happened to \Lugnut Man\? We read about these people but we never hear what happens later. Did he recover?
August 8th, 2009 at 10:45 am
Sunny,
We try to keep track of our stories and follow up on the ones that need following. Sometimes we are not able to get information about victims (which isn’t public information) or they don’t want to talk to us. Other times, things fall through the cracks, and for that we apologize. Anytime you ever wonder, “What ever happened to …?” feel free to ask. Call us or e-mail us (you can find reporters’ and editors’ information at http://kitsapsun.com/contact). We’ll appreciate the reminder.

Tom,
I don’t think your speed issue is a Sun problem. I’ve never had a problem with pages loading, particularly at the speed you are experiencing. I have a normal dsl connection and a five year old computer. You might want to try an alternative browser and see if that helps.
August 8th, 2009 at 12:19 pm
One other commenter above mentioned it. Can’t you make it easier to review back issues after returning from a vacation or business trip? The search function only works if if you know what it was that you misssed.

BRING BACK MAGNUM OPUS!!!
August 8th, 2009 at 1:06 pm
I’ve been a resident of Port Orchard for a year-and-a-half, so I’ve got the layout of this part of the Kitsap down pretty well. However, I have a problem with stories that refer to places in Poulsbo, Bainbridge, etc., that aren’t familiar to me. It would be nice if you could include a small map to show what area a story’s referring to, assuming that is pertinent to the reader’s understanding of the story. Kitsap county is huge and quite diverse, so a map would help.
Regarding design, I’d love to see the area with the blue type on a gray background change to something contrastier and, therefore, easier to read.
Finally, I agree that some stories seem to stay up for days for no apparent reason.
August 8th, 2009 at 1:10 pm
How come we can’t comment on most of the stories today?
Specifically, the stories about OC Camps/lego robotics, New Ferry Bids, Bangor Change-of-command, and ferry schedule changes don’t have links for comments today (8/8).
August 8th, 2009 at 5:16 pm
I’d like to see a link on the bottom of the story to go to “Next Story”. That way if I click the first story in the “911″ section,
for instance, a link at the bottom would take me to the second story, and so on. That way, I could quickly go through the stories in order.
August 8th, 2009 at 5:54 pm
javery,
You can view all back stories by the date they were published online (which is usually the day before they appear in print) by clicking on the “Archives” link at the very top of the site. You’ll get a full list of sports, news, obituaries and other story items by day. The direct link to that site is http://www.kitsapsun.com/news/
Jeff Hudson,
No.
Earl Kempsay,
I think the map idea is a good one. Let me talk with our news staff to see if we can find an efficient way to do so.
As for the redesign, we will redesign our site at the end of this year. It will look a lot like our sister paper, The Redding Record Searchlight at http://www.redding.com/ with changes to the color scheme and imagery.
Paul Dietz,
I was unaware until I read your comment that those were not enabled. We had a system malfunction last night, that did not automatically enable comments. I’ve fixed the stories you mentioned and a few others, and you can now comment on them. Please let us know any time you see any kind of glitch with the site.
The_Washingtonian
The way our stories database is set up, there’s really no way for quite a “next” button as you describe. However, in the inset box with our stories on the left-hand side, you should see a list of three headlines under the “More Code 911″ or something similar on other types of stories that will link you to other related stories.

I had a story idea the other day (not promoting something to benefit me, but an honest-go-goodness “news tip”, story. After talking to a call center woman who didn’t know diddly about kitsap, I hung up in disgust. She was condescending and not with it. How do we contact the news room (and that’s what I asked for), either by phone or email.
August 8th, 2009 at 7:09 pm
It is, well, only once I guess, very hard to find things on this site. After spending tens of minutes looking for the Road Warrior, I finally found it as a blog!?!?!?! And where is Mr. Outdoors? Theirs and others’ articles and email addresses are hidden inside ‘features’ or ‘blogs’ or not found at all.. Please address this sites navigation ills.
August 8th, 2009 at 7:55 pm
I went to the Redding site and if that is the format that you propose to use then I don’t think it is an improvement. It is too linear. White text on a black backround is a big no no.
Sort of a Bizzaro World Paper. I used to run an ad agency and I would hope that Scripts could afford to hire a good one.
Have more photos.
Having readers have to sign in to view comments may be a mistake.
KitsapSun posters can make up endless “fake” names. Can you at least post a number next to each user as to how many personalities they need to get their fake points across?
August 8th, 2009 at 8:25 pm
One other very important point.
Please allow a small dialog box for us to fill out our reason for flagging. It might help whoever happens to be on flagging duty at the Sun understand the importance.
For example: On a fairly recent story you allowed a unique poster to state that a severely injured child was ok and going to go home the next day. It was clearly a lie. The readers, and I suspect some family members, were hurt by this post. I flagged it maybe 10 times over the next day and sent an email directly to the Editor alerting him. I never got a response and I suspect it was because you had just switched Editors. That comment still stands.
August 8th, 2009 at 9:18 pm
On the Archives subject…I will also say that we are working to bring a new and better archive search utility to the site. This should be up and running in the next month or so, and I will make a post here on this blog when it is running.

August 8th, 2009 at 9:19 pm
I pretty much have given up on reading comments due to the nastiness and off-topic rants that appear. (not everyone stoops to this of course) I don’t know what can be done to prevent the unnecessary abuses, but I’ll keep thinking on it…
August 8th, 2009 at 9:56 pm
I’d like to be able to follow certain stories, so being able to login and have a custom page would be great. INcluding recently read articles, related stories, perhaps the ability to see recent blog posts in the blogs I follow on the sun. Things like that.
I don’t read the paper newspaper anymore. I read the Kitsap Sun for the local news only. If I want state or national, I have other sources. Keep the local news and local advertising.
I’ve been very surprised at the ad ‘imprints’ on me. I’ll stop by a business and remember if I saw them on Kitsap Sun. Local advertisers not only help you, they help me.
As for as anything in particular about what I’d like to see improved… enforce your terms of service for blogging and posting. Do whatever it takes to keep the dialog civil. All viewpoints should be welcome, but if people can’t say it civilly then they shouldn’t be given the forum to say it.
Thanks for listening.
Regards,
Kathryn Simpson

F Pargeter,
If you click the “contact” link at the top of the page, you will find a number that goes directly to the newsroom, and which is answered on weekdays by our assistant local news editor Vince Dice or local news editor Kim Rubenstein. That number is (360) 792-8558.
Roger Hoskins,
I agree that it can sometimes be confusing to search between our blogs and news stories, especially when we break news or have content that stays only on the blogs. We try to indicate in the paper when something like the Road Warrior originates as a blog post. As for Mr. Outdoors, if you go to our Sports section, you will find “Outdoors” content. There also is a link to the Outdoors section in the navigation at the top of our pages. You can go there directly by going to http://www.kitsapsun.com/news/sports/outdoors/
Rose Bud,
I think that’s a good idea. Let me see if that can be done. I’m sorry that you did not receive a response. Please feel free to e-mail me, our local news editors or Editor David Nelson anytime.
We can’t be certain of which commenters are the same people because multiple people can use the same IP address, say at a coffee shop, and those users don’t use the same e-mail addresses or provide us with their real names, and thus we can’t implement a system to shake out the sock puppets. Once a commenter has been on there awhile, though, you can get a pretty good idea of their stances and alignments (if you click on their names in any of the comments, you can see all the previous comments they’ve made), and just like you know to avoid people in non-digital life, it becomes easier to not read them.
HarCol,
We too are dismayed at the occasional nastiness in the comments. We are looking into ways to improve the conversation without stifling debate and fueling the trolls, which can be difficult endeavor. We are researching who among our comment community could make good citizen moderators and other improvements to our comment system. Read more about that here: http://www.kitsapsun.com/news/2009/jun/26/comment-moderators-wanted-kitsapsuncom/
Kathryn Simpson,
I’ll have to ask about the custom page. Our more tech savvy senior project manager Trent Covert may be a better person to speak to that. Bless your heart for saying that the ads make an impression. Tell every business you know! As for keeping the debate civil, as I said above, we’re working on it.

Angela,
Regarding the redesign I mentioned, thanks for the link. Funny thing, I was going to suggest you look at the Evansville (IN) Courier Press web page for some good ideas: http://www.courierpress.com/. I have to disagree with Rose Bud regarding white on black. It’s definitely a no-no for relative small text but it makes for an effective headline in display font sizes. I find the courierpress site to be extremely easy to skim — I get through it much faster than I do the KS site, and they have about the same amount of info.
August 9th, 2009 at 3:38 pm
Ditto Kathryn’s comments regarding a custom page and following stories, as well as better enforcement of ToS.
And whomever mentioned follow up on stories. Sometimes we ask reporters to do so under the articles or in the blogs and they simply ignore us. Clearly you can’t follow up on every story, but make a better attempt where those questions are poignant to better informing the public.
August 9th, 2009 at 6:18 pm
Here is a good suggestion. Could you post a “member since…” by each poster’s name so that we know if sock puppets are being used? Would cut down on the trash talk considerably and help people, abiet anonymously, own their words.
Regards,
Kathryn Simpson
August 9th, 2009 at 7:20 pm
Along those same lines, if a blogger has been blogging for some time and participates with civility, don’t make them jump through new hoops in new blogs by placing their comments in moderation for hours.
Putting new bloggers on hold status makes sense, but to others it penalises, disrupts the flow of discussion, and makes one have to scroll up to catch comments which were actually posted earlier but didn’t get approved until hours or days later.
August 9th, 2009 at 8:50 pm
Under the Community link, why in the world do you have Gig Harbor first? It’s not even part of Kitsap Co. I would suggest this order–Bremerton, Silverdale, Port Orchard, Poulsbo, Bainbridge Island, North Mason, Gig Harbor, then Kitsap Military.
The Classified link—Garage Sales is a farce. Why do I always have to put in my zip code and search radius–can’t it keep them in memory somehow? And, why do you have the map showing the Seattle side? I don’t think the Sun will ever have sales from that side! Why not expand the map a little to show more locally where the garage sales are. Is there a way you can add a link to MapQuest to find location of the sale quicker?
What time do you put the day’s upload? I’ll check online in the early evening and its new. I check the Sun site the next day and it’s still the same until late at night. There doesn’t seem to be a consistent time for the “new” page.
Why isn’t more important local news posted or updated immediately? IE: the recent power outage in Silverdale. I don’t think it was posted for an hour or so after Silverdale was heavily congested. Could the Sun have notified the public sooner?
Could their also be a link on the home page to show where road construction, detours, etc. are by the town/city’s name? Or how about ferry delays. I usually see it on KOMO immediately, but rarely on the Sun’s coverage.
And, why in the world, are you continually advertising the “New, state of the art, all stadium, all DIGITAL movie theater in Gig Harbor” all the time? Can’t you find something else more local–maybe a happening in theater, at the Library, a local game, etc. in Kitsap County!!
Just my ramblin’ thoughts!
Jean

Registered voter,
I’ll see if there’s a way we can address that. Generally, each new blog that’s created creates a new space with a new tone set by the blogger, which is why their relationships with commenters starts anew. But I understand the frustration.
Jean Hedman,
We’ll look at the community links and the Garage Sales finder.
We post stories throughout the business day, posting stories as soon as they’re written, Most go up about 6 or 7 p.m., after our reporters have contacted their sources during the day and written the results for the next day’s paper. We try to get information up as quickly as possible, but sometimes we don’t get the information immediately and once we do, we need to confirm (and our calls aren’t always immediately returned) and find out more, trustworthy information about and event before posting a story. Our first priority is accuracy, and sometimes speed suffers. Our superpower wish might be omnipresence, but in lieu of that, we rely on readers like you to call, Tweet or e-mail in news tips to set the reporting in motion.
Thank you for your thoughts, keep ‘em coming.

How about a consumer / problem solvers section. Alert readers about good / bad deals, scams, frauds etc.
August 10th, 2009 at 10:53 pm
Considering the amount of people who are transplants to this county, it would be wonderful to have a section of your paper dedicated to “one tank” trip ideas- places one can get to on a tank of gas, or less. It would be fairly easy to do a weekly article on a day trip idea coinciding with the season, so people, especially newbies, can take advantage of living in the area. Also, restaurant reviews would not only be wonderful, but also helpful. I currently rely on a Kitsap thread on a different site to pick out dinner ideas, and it is subpar. I have been to the chain restaurants, but I would like to know about the hidden gems in an effort to support the local businesses. I would be looking for price range, signature dishes, and a rating of the food/service/atmosphere.
I know this could possibly require extra staff, and perhaps that is not feasible, so maybe a message board to exchange ideas or reviews would be better.
August 11th, 2009 at 10:21 am
That’s a great idea, Bridget. I have suggested a travel blog before, whether it’s a day trip to Seattle, a weekend push to La Push, or stealing money from orphanages and going to Cabo. (Andrew’s idea) A drive around the canal can be exciting if you have the right attitude and you can convey that pleasure if you have any writing skill.
The dining. Fish and chips at the airport diner. Don’t bother asking for the secret recipe.
August 11th, 2009 at 10:47 am
Angela,
I don’t have any specific suggestion. I just want to say how much I appreciate The Sun’s efforts to include their reader community in their efforts.
August 11th, 2009 at 12:47 pm
It would be great to have more focus on North Kitsap. All you have right now under “Community” is Poulsbo. Pt. Gamble, Hansville, Eglon, Kingston, Indianola, and Suquamish all have vibrant communities. Perhaps you could do an in-depth history on the Arborwood project, which is about to become a reality. This project alone has the potential to double the population of Kingston. Many of us believe our community has not prepared for such an impact. This story and many others would be greatly appreciated.
August 11th, 2009 at 2:18 pm
Hey Angela, Elliott is right…thanks for being so interactive with us.
A lot of times I find myself checking back on stories and only want to read the latest or newest comments. Any chance a “go to end” button or something similar can be added so you can go right to the last comment instead of scrolling and scrolling and trying to figure out where you left off reading?
In addition, is it possible for the number of comments, which is shown while the story is on the front page but does not appear later, to remain with the story once it cycles through to the archives? When I am following a story I can tell if new comments have been added at a glance by an increase in the number. That way I don’t waste time scrolling through older stories only to find nothing new has been added, or the other side which is new comments have been added but I can only find out that they have, much later, by scrolling through.
Also, because of the recent incident with the Herndon video interview, any chance a calendar can be added to the opinion page and continually updated with a schedule of coming events?
ANY improvements to the “search” feature for the archives would be helpful. It took me a considerable amount of time to find the article from 2008 outlining your rules for Editorial Board service which I used to point out a discrepancy in the Editorial Board decision making process that was then reversed. Maybe if the search feature was more refined and easier to use, you guys would have found it first. (smile)

Bridget and Karen,
More local trips are definitely on our minds of things we’re planning to add as we build our Northwestguide.com travel site. Look for it in the future. As for a travel blogger, we would absolutely love to have one! If you know anyone who’s interested or suggest we approach, send me an e-mail at adice@kitsapun.com.
NT,
I understand the issue with clarity on our community sites. The Poulsbo community site does include information about the greater North Kitsap community. Early this year, we had some shifting of beats. Reporter Brynn Grimley has been working to develop sources and report about news in those areas, such as her coverage this weekend of the Kingston slug InFESTation (http://www.kitsapsun.com/news/2009/aug/08/on-the-slime-free-trail-of-slugs-in-kingston/), and she’ll be working on updating what’s happening with the Kingston master plan. Anytime you hear of a story we should be covering and aren’t, e-mail her at bgrimley@kitsapsun.com.
Regarding Arborwood, we are unaware of any new major developments in regards to that project (if there are, please let us know). Here is a list of stories we’ve done on that development:

Coleen,
Good idea on the list of upcoming discussions on the editorial page. Expect to see that either by the end of this week or next. I’ll check on our capability to add comment counts to stories. Scripps has been making improvements to our search and will continue to change it in the future. I think the editorial board thing brings up another thing we can improve, namely putting our guidelines and policies in easy-to-find places on the site.
Thanks for the suggestions, everyone. Some really good ideas are being posted here!

Kathryn’s right…some of the ads are really catchy… including one I THOUGHT said CIA but before I finished my double take and looked back at the site…another ad scrolled into place.
The attractive and light new logo is nice too..
I’d like to see the date in a more predominate place, such as top, middle of the page.
I’d like to see lists of folks who offer special services, such as dog walkers, poop scooper and dog groomers on wheels.
The physically challenged need landscapers/garden design folks to set up their gardening (containers, for example) based on their individual requirements. Such a garden set-up would allow folks to continue gardening around their physical capability. They can garden on a deck but might need help to set it up properly.
Good job, guys…

I would like to know if there’s a reason that the most recent editorial (Our View) is not available today (Aug 20)? The most recent online appears to be last Sunday.
Also, I’d like make a request that you state your letters policy regarding candidate support letters during the general election campaign cycle.
You published a letter from a candidate last week, that kind of thing is clearly not fair, and doesn’t fall within guidelines of equal access – I’ve written a letter to the editor about this, and rec’d no response.
Thanks.
August 20th, 2009 at 10:44 am
DebMcD, Our editorial for today apparently did not make it to the site. Thank you for letting us know. We did not have one Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday. I agree that it would be a good idea to put our letters policy. I’ll be placing it on the letters to the editor page online later this week.

How do I get a job as the travel blogger? It would be fun and a great community service as some would like to see me out of town more often.
Seriously, though (since I already have a job), I’d love to see a weekly local restaurant review.
I’d also like to see you take your daily paper inserts and make PDFs out of them, with an advertising links page, so that those of us who only read the paper online can flip through the advertising (especially the Sunday editions). I’ve been looking for a new vehicle and have to actually touch newsprint to see the local deals available (ick!)
