Nathan lowered his own personal record in the 100 free and will head to tonight’s semifinal.
The 19-year-old from Bremerton had a split time of 23.50 (Michael Phelps led at the first 50 with a 23.38) and finished with a 48.89 — the 10th fastest qualifying time. It’s the first time Adrian has gone under 49 seconds. As soon as the seeding for tonight’s semifinals are out I’ll post it here on The Blogstroke.
Couple of notes, I heard on the Web cast that Phelps may scratch this event in order to concentrate on the 200-meter butterfly, a much more strenuous event than a sprint freestyle. Phelps is seeded second. Hopefully I can find that out later today.
Garrett Weber-Gale also set an American record in the 100 free and earned the top seed in 47.78. At this point, I wouldn’t be surprised at all if tomorrow night’s winner of this even goes 47-low or even a 46-high. The world record (held by Phelps) is 47.5.
