Who is that last Husky to win on PGA Tour?

July 7th, 2012 by cstark

OK, one more Troy Kelly post. That’s all I’ve got time for. I’m suppose to be putting out a Sunday section.

This one is  courtesy Brian Toms from the University of Washington sports information department.

According to Toms, Kelly is in position to be the first Husky since George Bayer to win a PGA Tour stop. Bayer won in St. Petersburg, Fla. on March 21, 1960. Bremerton’s Bayer, like Kelly, grew up playing at Kitsap Golf & Country Club. Kelly was a two-time All-American at the UW in 1999 and 2000 and placed second to Luke Donald at the ’99 NCAA Championships.

  1. Craig Says:

    Hi Chuck,

There was a Mike Kelly who was the star of the Central Kitsap golf team in 1964 and played junior college golf at Olympic College. He was a scratch golfer and the longest hitter at Kitsap back when the membership included several of George Bayer’s brothers. One of the Bayers used to hit effortless 200 yard 7 irons that flew the entire length of the original practice range. Northwest golfers tend to be long hitters because the ball plugs instead of bouncing eight months out of the year. Any idea if the Kelly brothers and their dad are relatives of Mike Kelly?

  2. Craig Says:

I think Mike’s dad was a club member named Pat Kelly.

  3. cstark Says:

I’m pretty sure Mike Kelly is not a relative. I’ll look into it.
