Troy Kelly tied for 7th at PGA’s Greenbrier Classic

July 7th, 2012 by cstark

Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson are on their way home after missing the cut at the Greenbrier Classic in White Sulphur Springs, W. Va., but the No. 464-ranked player in the world — Troy Kelly — plays on.

Kelly, No. 225 on the PGA Tour money list with winnings of $81,644,  shot a second-round 67 and started the third round 4-under and tied for 23rd in the PGA Tournament.

Woods, coming off a victory at the Congressional, has only missed nine cuts in his career — a truly remarkable stat when you consider the level of talent on tour and how long Woods has been at it.

Kelly, 34, has missed eight cuts this year. This is his 15th PGA event of the year and the seventh time he’s stayed around for the final two rounds. Maybe this is the week the former Washington Husky posts a top-20 finish. His best finish on tour has been a tie for 37th earlier this year at the Mayakoba Classic.

UPDATE:

Kelly birdied his first two holes this morning and is now tied for 9th. He’s playing with Hunter Haas and Pat Perez. CBS’ TV coverage starts at noon. You now  there’s some excited folks at Kelly’s 19th Hole in Chico.

ANOTHER UPDATE, ANOTHER BIRDIE:

Kelly keep smoking up the ladder. He’s birdied three of the first four holes and is now tied for 7th.

I’ll check back in a couple of hours. Here’s the link to the leaderboard.
