July 6th, 2009 by cstarkWillie Bloomquist hit his first second home run and later added a 2-run triple in Kansas City’s 4-3 win over Detroit on Monday night. The South Kitsap grad and former Mariner was 3-for-4, raising his average to .284. Check out the MLB.com story here.
Willie remains a lightning rod for commentary in the blogosphere. People love to trash him. Here’s an example. Seems like the only people that truly appreciate him are his managers and teammates. And that’s what counts.
I admit to a bit of homerism when it comes to Willie, but I really admire the way he goes about his business. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. He’s like David Eckstein, only he’s more athletic. And the light-hitting Eckstein, who chokes up on the bat higher than anybody since Nellie Fox, was a former MVP of the the World Series.
Nellie Fox? Yeah, I’m dating myself.
