Bainbridge Mountaineer Viesturs Featured on The Colbert Report

A lot of you have probably read that Bainbridge’s mountaineering giant Ed Viesturs and climbing guide Peter Whittaker will lead NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, Seahawks coach Jim Mora, Seahawks CEO Tod Leiweke and United Way CEO Jon Fine on a benefit climb of Mount Rainier. They’ll start their climb on Sunday and if things go according to plan, the group will plant a flag at the summit three days later.

A lot of you might not know that Viesturs — the only American to summit all 14 of the world’s 26,000-plus-foot peaks without supplemental oxygen — planted a Colbert Report flag on top of Mount Everest in May. It was his seventh successful climb of Everest. He was making good on a promise he made to Stephen Colbert during a March 14, 2007 interview on Comedy Central’s “The Colbert Report.” Viesturs appeared on the show again Thursday night and Colbert got off some pretty funny lines. After asking Viesturs how many times he’d climbed Everett, Colbert pulled a punch card out of his pocket, punched it and told him the 11th one was good for a free climb.

If I can find a link of that appearance, I’ll add it. In the meantime, here’s a link to Viesturs’ Web site. And here’s a link to Viesturs’ first appearance on The Colbert Report. And here’s a link to the benefit climb of Mount Rainier.
