Kitsap Cancer Services Has Another Successful Outing
Mark Smaha, the former Washington State athletic trainer, reported that the Kitsap Cancer Services Celebrity Benefit golf tournament held on Friday at Kitsap Golf & Country Club was another smashing success.
The non-profit organization raises money for support and education for people and families living with cancer in the county.
Here’s a column I wrote a year ago about Smaha and his wife Jackie, a cancer survivor.
And here’s the impressive list of former athletes — a tribute to the Smahas — who were knocking the golf ball around Kitsap Golf & Country Club last Friday:
Cougar baseball/Arizona Diamondback Rob Ryan; Cougar football All-American Jason Gesser, Husky football coach Jim Lambright; UW and Seattle Seahawk Paul Skansi, All American WSU /Denver Bronco running back Kerry Porter; WSU football coach Jim Walden; WSU All American/New Orleans Rookie of the Year running back Reuben Mayes; Cougar All-Pac 10/San Francisco Super Bowl tight end Brett Carolan; Cougar/ NBA star Craig Ehlo; WSU All- American/Cincinnati Bengal QB Jack Thompson; UW football coach and former WSU player Dick Baird; Cougar baseball player and 3-time Gold Glove winner/AL batting champion/Seattle Mariner John Olerud, and WSU QB and Washington Redskin Super Bowl MVP Mark Rypien.
“Great weather, Kitsap Golf and Country Club hospitality, the celebrities and participants made the event successful in raising money for it’s efforts to help people in the Kitsap community,” wrote Smaha. “This year, KCS is partnering its efforts with Harrison Hospital and assisting with several outreach programs for the upcoming year.”
