Friday Afternoon Club: South Kitsap Picks the Oscars

What are you doing for fun this weekend in South Kitsap and beyond?

Watching the Oscars on Sunday perhaps? Everyone loves to make their picks and predictions, probably as much or more than watching the show itself.

I don’t watch many movies in a year, so I’m glad I got to see “Little Miss Sunshine” and “The Pursuit of Happyness.” (I deeply regret having seen “Material Girls” with Hilary Duff and her sister, What’s-Her-Name. What can I say? My teenage daughter made me do it.)

“Little Miss Sunshine” was a hoot. It’s one of those films that makes you feel like no matter how quirky and dysfunctional your family is — and there are days when mine registers about a 5 on the Q&D scale — at least you didn’t have to steal your grandfather’s body out of the emergency room — long story.

“The Pursuit of Happyness” blew me away. Will Smith has come a long way since “Fresh Prince,” and he should win best actor for his tender portrayal of of single dad Chris Gardner. His real-life son, Jaden Smith, plays his son in the movie, and there’s great chemistry between them. Kitsap Arts & Entertainment writer Michael Moore (no relation to the director), calls the movie “a little too feel good,” but to me it earns every bit of its three Kleenex ending.

Besides, Mike Moore didn’t even see the movie, as he admits: “Since I haven’t even seen the nominated films, I can predict with a clear head, influenced by the only things that matter: politics and marketing.

Do you know what this means? You, too, are fully qualified to be a film critic. So have at it. Make your Oscar picks at the Kitsap Sun’s Web site.

Thanks for tuning in. Have a great weekend.

P.S. Have patience if the links don’t work. I’m on a learning curve in blog land.

  1. I’m spending the morning waving signs encouraging folks to “Invest with a YES” for the South Kitsap Schools Bond.

In the afternoon, I’m attending the SK Elementary School basketball tournament, where I’ll be enjoying watching all the elementary school “All-Stars” play some really good hoops at the SKHS Gym.

By the way, I’m rooting for Sidney Glen to take it all. Go Tom and Go Dolphins!

As for the Oscars, I’m not all that interested.
