TENTS, TARPS & SLEEPING BAGS NEEDED

May 20th, 2010 by Sally Santana
The Salvation Army, NK Fishline and Pastor Art’s Taking It To The Streets Ministries are out of sleeping bags, 2-person tents and tarps and could use your help in acquiring some.
For many homeless, the time for couch surfing during the worst of the weather is over and crowded families are asking folks to find another place to live. That can end up being outside.
Tents and sleeping bags can be any color; brown or cami is preferred for the tarps – it draws less attention than the bright blue, when in the woods.
There are reasons why an individual would go thru more than one or two sets of tents and sleeping bags each year.
First, the zippers on both items aren’t made for daily, multiple use 24/365. Especially the more inexpensive models. They lose teeth and rip away from the material.
Second, neither item, in a routine camping situation, would be required to be continually exposed to the elements for months on end. Material rots when left in rainwater time after time. Sleeping bags (and their occupants) generally lie directly on the ground, whether it’s a hot night or they end up in a rain puddle. Some have tarps underneath, others don’t. Having a tarp doesn’t guarantee a dry night if it rains, but helps insulate from the ground other times. Also, those who don’t have tents throw tarps over their bags before they climb inside to help keep moisture (dew, rain) off their faces, out of their ears, etc.
Three, during the coldest time of winter, two fully dressed people will stuff themselves into one bag for the additional body heat. This puts great strains on material and zippers.
Please drop off your items (for both ministries) at The Salvation Army,832 Sixth St., downtown Bremerton, between 8 am and 4 pm, Monday thru Friday. Pastor Art and Major Baker will divvy the items up. If you’re in Poulsbo, you can leave them at the NK Fishline office, 18916 3rd Ave. NE between 10 am and 3 pm.
Thank you so very much for your compassion.
