But the mystery remains as to the illogical signage one has seen in approaching the terminal.
Richard says signs off the terminal premises are the province of the city of Bremerton and he can only offer advice to the city.
There has been and still is a sign at the terminal designating the concourse curbing that is painted blue to be where the disabled and frail elderly can be dropped off and picked up.
But you can’t see that sign until you’ve passed signs saying that lane is for transit only, and turned a corner.
Lately, it’s gotten worse. Two signs put up during construction of the downtown tunnel now say there’s NO parking or passenger pickup on the deck, despite the sign about the blue curbing, which is still there, and despite what Richard described two columns ago as accommodations for the infirm on the deck.
The out basket: About all I can learn is that the reasoning behind the former signs left town with a previous city employee.
Relatively new city traffic engineer Larry Matel said previous signage was all worked out by his predecessor, adding, “I don’t have any information on the history or the reasoning behind the signage.”
Things may get better once the tunnel is complete.
Lynn Price, the city’s lead on the tunnel job says, “We are aware of the special access needs of the elderly and the handicapped and they will be appropriately addressed by the time the project is complete and put into operation. 
“Discussions are continuing between representatives of Kitsap Transit, Washington Ferries, and the City of Bremerton to not only address the needs of the mobility challenged but also respect the operating needs of the three entities. A detailed operations plan for traffic, transit and pedestrians will be the outcome of the discussions.”
Lynn gave these tentative plans for signs approaching the ferry terminal when the tunnel is complete.
On Burwell Street, eastbound traffic (at Pacific Avenue) will be signed as Ferry Vehicle Loading Only in the curb lane and Local/Ferry Drop-Off Pick Up in the inside lane.
Pacific Avenue, south of Burwell Street, will remain one-way southbound but will be a three-lane roadway where the two western-most lanes will be separated by a landscaped median from the eastern-most lane, he said.
The easternmost southbound traffic lane will be signed for Local & Ferry Drop-Off Pick–Up. Ferry Drop-Off Pick-Up vehicles will turn off Pacific onto Second Street, as they do today, to access designated on-street parking stalls.  The two westerly southbound lanes are to be signed as either Ferry or Bus lanes.

  1. as of 9/11/11, the signs are still confusing. where are you supposed to drop off passangers with luggage? if you follow the signs for drop off, you end up over a block away. if you follow the transit signs and don’t have a disability card, you get a ticket (124$ ouch). so how are we expected to get passangeers onto the ferry when bringing heavy bags? why are we restricted from using the transit lane?
