The in basket: Sue DeArman says in an e-mail, “I was wondering and
hoping if there are any plans for improvement on the road where
Pioneer Way meets Highway 3 in North Kitsap. Over the last 20 years
much development has taken place, substantially increasing the
amount of traffic that enters and leaves Pioneer Way
(there).
“It is not only a dangerous intersection, it has become
increasingly difficult to turn either left or right at the stop
sign and onto Highway 3. With the Hill Moving Company’s big
moving trucks and the volume of vehicles coming and going from the
Twelve Trees light industrial park, the nearby elementary school
and several housing developments, I avoid this intersection as
often as I can.
“It seems to me that the installation of a right-turn lane would
alleviate much of the congestion at this point in the road.
There have already been terrible fatal accidents at this
intersection and I fear it is only a matter of time before it
happens again.”
The out basket: I’m glad Sue asked, because I was unaware of how
close the solution to the problem is.
Kelly Stowe of the Olympic Region of state highways tells me that a
traffic light there and another at Big Valley Road to the north
both are to be done this winter or next spring.
Bids are being sought on the twin projects now. Details can be seen
online at http://www.wsdot.wa.gov/Projects/SR3/PioneerSignals/
Thanks for writing about DOT’s plans to install traffic signals at Hwy 3/Pioneer Way and Hwy 3/Big Valley. I am a frequent traveler in the area and appreciate the good news!
