Other ways to Sea-Tac from the north

I was fairly sure the recent column on ways to get to Sea-Tac Airport from the north was going to miss an option or two and I was right.
I realized as I read it in the paper that I’d omitted perhaps the most likely choice – taking your car across on the ferry and driving south.

I was fairly sure Friday’s column on ways to get to Sea-Tac Airport from the north was going to miss an option or two and I was right.
I realized as I read it in the paper that I’d omitted perhaps the most likely choice – taking your car across on the ferry and driving south.
Two readers e-mailed other ideas.
Leroy McVay of Poulsbo wrote, “From Coleman Dock, turn right and follow Alaskan Way.  Two blocks past Spokane Street, it merges with E. Marginal Way.  Follow signs for First Avenue South bridge / SR 509, a right turn.  Across the bridge follow signs for SR 509, a veer to the left.  Keep going a few miles and follow exit signs for SeaTac / SR 518.  On SR 518 follow signs to terminal.  This sounds difficult but it’s actually very easy and just as fast as I-5 without the hassle.”
Kristie Hayek said, “You missed the cheapest and maybe one of the easiest ways to the airport. You can take the ferry from Southworth to Fauntleroy and catch the Sound Transit bus #560, which runs about every 30 minutes on weekdays, from Fauntleroy, at the street end of the ferry dock.
“It drops you right at the terminal for $2.50/adult. The bus ride is about 30 minutes. No traffic or parking nightmares for those dropping people off! My kids had a flight that left at 6 p.m. and I was dreading rush hour traffic to drop them off and return home again. I decided that if we could take the ferry and bus, then so could they. They had no complaints. The traveler just needs to have bags that they can manage.”
Good advice under any circumstances, I think. And it probably is the cheapest when you consider the lower ferry fare to Fauntleroy, though the Metro bus fare from downtown is less.
