Stop bars requested on Lazy S Lane

The in basket: John Lesser wrote a while back to say, “On Wednesday (July 9), I passed yet another accident at the intersection of John Carlson Road and Lazy S Lane (in Central Kitsap). I have lived in this area for many years and have passed many accidents at that intersection. A few years ago I called the county and requested they paint stop bars on Lazy S to help alert motorists to the required stop. I was told the next time the engineers were in the area they would take a look. Nothing has changed. Maybe you can get an answer from the county.”

The out basket: Jeff Shea, the county’s traffic engineer, says “The accident history (there) shows one in 2001, none in 2002 and 2003, four in 2004,
one in 2005, and one in 2006. Certainly every accident is significant, but
these numbers are not high for an intersection.
“When looking at the cause of the accidents,” he said. “We found that most were due to motorists running the stop sign. Two accidents were alcohol-related.
“Stop bars are installed to help motorists know where to stop so cars
don’t encroach in travel lanes while waiting at the stop sign,” he said. “They are not very effective as warning devices as you usually don’t see them
until you’re on top of them.
“We will look at the intersection and see what can be done to improve
visibility of the stop sign. If it looks like a stop bar will help
prevent accidents, we will install one,” he said.
