Why no marked detour on Mile Hill Drive?

The in basket: Seeing mention of a designated detour around the recent week-long closure of Seabeck-Holly Road for a culvert replacement reminded me that my neighbor Harold Fitzwater had wondered why the same thing wasn’t done to direct people around the work on Mile Hill Drive between Long Lake Road and Colchester Drive.

A lot of people know how to get around the work without being told, but Harold thinks the number of cars waiting to follow a pilot car through the work zone would be reduced and so the delays shortened if there was a marked detour.
The out basket: Doug Bear of Kitsap County Public Works said the county usually doesn’t sign detours unless the road is closed, and Mile Hill Drive has remained open, though often reduced to just one lane, throughout the work. Further, he said, there are so many possible detour routes in that area of South Kitsap that signing one might imply that the others aren’t open and create confusion.
