Pumas impressive in preseason opener

Did the Pumas win their first preseason game Wednesday night against Thurston County Premier FC, a U-20 team?

Yes.

What was the final score?

Not sure. Head coach James Ritchie believes it was close to 15-0, but even he lost track after a while.

“We stomped ’em,” he said. “It wasn’t much of a game.”

Ritchie was trying to be polite.

“They were young lads,” he said.

Here were the starters from the game:
Goalkeeper-Dustyn Brim
Right back-Danny Medina
Left back-Pierre Rappolt
Central defenders-Steve Mohn, Justin Robbins
Left midfielder-Kyle Johnson
Right midfielder-Greg Miley
Center midfielders-Daniel Fabian, Matt Friesen
Forwards-Christopher Bettencourt, Felipe Heredia

Ritchie mentioned Johnson and Fabian when I asked him if anybody stood out. He said Brim played the first half in net, while Zac Lubin played the second half. Liviu Bird, expected to be the No. 3 goalkeeper, played the last five minutes. … Of the players who started, Miley and Heredia are the only two who are unsigned. Heredia played at Chemeketa CC in the fall, leading the Storm to the NWAACC title. … The Pumas play their second preseason game Saturday in Bellingham at 4:30 p.m. Ritchie said the Bellingham team will consist of players of the WSA Rapids indoor team, as well as players from Western Washington University.
