Kitsap Frames Challenge #30: Round 1

A few Halloween themed photos have already been entered for this week’s photo challenge. Don’t forget you’ve got until November 2nd so there’s no rush but of course feel free to upload those Halloween photos at any time!

Kitsap Frames Challenge #28 Entries: Round 1

Apparently we had a bunch of photographers out there this past weekend getting up close and personal with their subjects!

I mean all the photos entered already most certainly were taken this past weekend, since we highly ENCOURAGE everyone to shoot the challenge in the week that it is assigned…RIGHT!?!? 😉

PHOTO: Sun Photo Department’s Fair Photos

As was I was downloading our reader submitted fair photos for publication (that’s right our chosen “standouts” may be running in the paper this weekend) I realized that I never posted Larry and I’s favorite photos that we shot while at the fair.

***side note: I would also have posted Derek’s fair photos but it seems he didn’t attend the fair at all this year (insert disappointed head shake here).***

PHOTO: Kitsap Frames Photo Challenge #24: The Rule of Thirds

That’s right we’re going all the way back to the basics of photography with this week’s challenge featuring the rule of thirds.

The rule of thirds implies that images are most pleasing when the subjects or regions are composed along imaginary lines which divide the image into thirds — both vertically and horizontally. The four points where these lines intersect are the strongest focal points. The lines themselves are the second strongest focal points therefore by placing your subject etc. on or very near these intersection points will give you the strongest composition.

Now here’s the thing, SOME rules are meant to be broken and this is one of them but for this challenge you must follow the rule. So show us your best image using the rule of thirds by placing important elements of your composition where the imaginary lines intersect or along the lines themselves. That means not a single photo entered should utilize centered composition.

Many camera viewfinders have a rule of thirds grid built in, but if yours does not then just imagine those lines while you are composing the photograph.

The photo can be of anything- that’s right ANYTHING just show us the rule of thirds.

You’ll have until August 23rd. to show us your best shot. Remember we encourage you to get out there and shoot the challenge in the week that it is posted and the rules and regulations will be posted at the end of this post. (NOTE FROM DEREK: Try to limit your entries to one or two of your best. It gets hard sifting through 10 photos from one person.)

***To recap: Every week we will post a new photography “challenge” to help build on all of our current photography skills and to encourage everyone to get out and get shooting (cameras not guns). While we encourage you to shoot the challenge in the week that it is assigned, we will however accept entries taken prior to the challenge assignment date.

When you’ve got your favorite shot, login to the Kitsap Sun Your Media Site (if you don’t already have a login, you can quickly set it one up) or click the “Kitsap Frames Photo Challenge Entries” button over there on the right side of the page and upload your image to the Kitsap Frames Photo Challenge Channel (the channels run along the left hand side of the page, again if you can’t seem to get it into the channel just upload it normally and send me an email and we’ll move it).

PHOTO: Kitsap Frames Photo Challenge #21: Self Portrait

We have come to the conclusion that we don’t think it’s fair that we don’t know who all our photo challenge friends are out there.

There’s a pretty good chance that if you see a gal with dark hair lugging around a bunch of cameras with a notebook stuck in her back pocket that, that would be me (Meegan) and if you see a guy lugging a giant video camera/ tripod and notebook around that would be Derek. But who the heck are you people?!?!?

Therefore our next challenge is to take a self portrait. We want to see a photo depicting any likeness of a you. and you can be as creative as you would like, in fact we always encourage creative and “out of the box” thinking here at Kitsap Frames.

You’ll have until July 28th. at noon to show us your best self portrait. Again we ENCOURAGE you to go out and shoot the challenge in the week that it is posted but we will accept older photos (but it is frowned upon) and the “rules/regulations” will be posted at the bottom.

PHOTO: Kitsap Frames Challenge #19: Repetition

Repetition is everywhere and all you have to do is look for it. It might be a pattern in nature, something man made, shapes, colors or textures.

We want to see your best photograph depicting repetition. It doesn’t matter if it is a subtle part or the dominant subject of your image as long as something repeats within the frame.

Deadline for entries is July 8th. at noon. Again we ENCOURAGE you to go out and shoot the challenge in the week that it is posted but we will accept older photos (but it is frowned upon) and the “rules/regulations” will be posted at the bottom.
